We can for next year;

If we signed Callahan for $6m and put Bennett on Malkin's LW the top 6 would look like this;

Kunitz $3.85m - Crosby $8.7m - Callahan $6m
Bennett $0.900k - Malkin $9.5m - Neal $5m

$33.95m on our top 6 I think.

Funny you say that considering lesser UFA's recently have gone for multiple high picks.

But don't let proven trends ruin your outlook. You know the market better than the GM's that set it. You tell us how little Callahan will go for when 4th liners have been traded for 1st round picks

Why would you put Callahan in Dupuis' spot though?

It'll still be high when you look at last years market for guys like Morrow, Clowe, and Doug Murray. Callahan is superior to all three of those players. I think the Rangers could grab a first + good prospect/player.

Trade Callahan. Negotiate with Girardi. I'd give Girardi AT MOST 4 years. AT MOST.
What type of package would you want for Callahan?

You won't get either player for Gagner, let alone both. Grats on creating the worst proposal in this fresh thread.

Don't get me wrong...Callahan would get a pretty good pick and lesser player but his UFA status will limit it somewhat. I was responding to some Ranger fans who think they will get a top line signed player. That is all.

I'm willing to pay 6 million for 3-4 years of Callahan. The dude plays his heart out, kills penalties, puts up decent amounts of points and is a leader. We'll have TONS of cap room and need a decent winger and leader for the kids, and Callahan fits that perfectly. Obviously something like Clarkson's deal is too much IMO, but if he wants 6 million for a couple years I can live with that.

That's all well and good as long as your willing to trade him or let him walk. He might take a little less to get the contract signed now/stay where he is, but I don't see him taking 4 years when some team will inevitably throw 6-7 years at him as a UFA. It'll probably be a 6 year deal, but I'd be thrilled if Sather could keep it at 5.

Id give Girardi 6. He will want that. 5.75 million. Id be completely happy with that deal. It is Callahan anything north of 5.5 that would make me vomit.

Anyone who thinks that is out to lunch, but a first plus maybe a young contract controlled forward or good prospect would probably do it… There's always the chance that you get a bidding war though, and some team overpays (Hope so!)...

Rangers needs:

Top 6 C
Top 4 Offensive RD
Top 6 LW

Not saying we're going to get these players, but we're going to want prospects/yonug players that can at least project as these in the future.

Ryan Callahans best days are way behind him

He's the type of UFA the rangers are notorious for signing to be major players and then are let down

I'd deal him today he's been awful. Chris Drury like 6 mil? Laughable

Dan Girardi u do whatever u gotta do to keep

Because:

A) Dupuis is a third liner now.
B) Dupuis did his ACL and is out until next year at the earliest - those are the earliest time frames anyway.

That's fair. Brassard is a RFA and a bit underwhelming. Richards will be gone so we'll only have Stepan as a top 6.

If we lose Girardi, then yes, we need a top 4 RD

And Pouliot is an UFA and is meh so yeah, second line LW

I don't think St Louis has enough people they could get rid of for cap space to get a bunch of players. They only have 1.5 mill right now

My first reaction was to laugh it off--however--for those who remember what Donald Fehr did with baseball--Fehr was very hands on with player contracts and I got this strange feeling he will be like that with hockey as well. fehr hates hometown discounts and he does he best to stop them

I think the Rangers are better off keeping Girardi. I feel as if Callahan is already turning into Drury.
