I live up here, I have watched him for five or so years, he tries to do too much. Sure, he plays a style that will lead to injuries, as does Backes. He is the same sort of dude as Backes.

As far as his greed level goes, I don't know how you have access to it, but his having a down year would suggest he'd be more likely to sign with his current team since his value on the open market will be as low as it has been since he became a known quantity. He's the sort of player you add as a finishing piece at this point, not a player you build around, so it's not clear who's going to overpay for him.

I'd still be a little surprised if NYR let's him get away. Vigneault would have to be saying, 'he's not my guy.'

Western Conf teams suggest the Rangers are gathering intel on Chris Stewart. Callahan for Stewart would be a sweet deal for the Blues.

Would absolutely love it.

Would much rather go to war with Ryan Callahan than Chris Stewart and you trade away his contract for next season. Too brilliant.

We won't be able to afford to resign Callahan though.

It's still worth Stewart.

Stewart is gone in the summer either way, and upgrading his spot in the lineup this year would be huge.

Is trading him for a rental worth it when we could get picks/prospects that will be helpful for years to come?

Rangers fans were throwing Jaskin's name around so I machine gunned the hell out of that idea before it built momentum.

Completely. It's a perfect way to leverage Stewart's market value into short term gain while simultaneously disposing of his 2014-15 contract to make room for a better player. He's an overpaid 3rd line winger and just making a straight offseason swap for a pick won't garner anything of significance for a team looking to win a Cup in the next 3 years. This would be a perfect "pick your spot" rental trade because it also helps out next years books.

Now, the Blues would have to add a bit for a Callahan...

I don't think so. I'd rather get futures for Stewart.

I'm on board for this. I saw a ranger fan (I think it was a ranger fan at least) on the main board toss out Stewart + 2nd if Callahan re signs/ 3rd if he doesn't. I'd be all over that.

For what reason? If Roy leaves and one of the goalies do, he'd be able to return for a decent price.

I wonder what the chances are we see this happening???

That's the thing though, Callahan will demand at least a Dustin Brown type of contract. I'm not going to fork out 5.8 mil a year for Callahan when we already have our two top RW's in Tarasenko and Oshie.

I wouldn't be opposed to be a Stewart-Calahan straight swap but I want nothing to do with re-signing him. The way he plays, a 6+ mil a year contract is gonna be awful in 3 years, let alone the 7 he will probably demand.

Oh HF boards the land of make believe where Callahan has a guaranteed higher rental value than Hossa or Kovalchuck. What is in the water in NY? Because clearly those people are suffering delusions of grandeur.

I'm not as sold on swapping Stewart for Callahan. I don't watch Callahan a lot, but my understanding is that he was an Oshie type player for a few years. It does not look like he's been close to that level at all this year though. Maybe I'm wrong, but just from looking at his stats and factoring in that his contract is up soon, I would think the NYR would have to add a draft pick to Callahan to get Stewart.

Stewart for Cally? Yes! Don't even care abou re-signing him. While gaining futures would be nice, sometimes you have to risk assets for a cup run.

As a Blues fan I think we have to add. Won't be a lot though.

As far as I am concerned it would be a great trade for the Blues. For the people saying they would rather get futures for Stewart (and I can understand why), I think you also have to acknowledge that it is not a certainty that the picks would pan out. There is a chance Callahan plays more games in a Blues uniform, even as rental, then that draft pick or picks ever do. Not only that it is probably not a bad decision to use Stewart as an asset for something that can help us immediately. Just something to think about.

How dare I not want to take Jaskin/Rattie + 1st for Callahan? Some of these Ranger brosephs are stone idiots.

Depending on who's picks and what draft they are in they could be used for a future deadline deal or a deal for a player that's not a UFA. I wouldn't mind adding Cally, I am not adverse to swapping him for Cally even. but trading a current player like Stewart for futures goes further than just what we could draft with the picks.
