Let's crunch numbers!

Any dead horses around? For beating, not having sex with.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/feature.asp?fid=6926

We have $10.3 Mill tied up to 10 players. 4 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 1 goalie.

Let's say we sign Berglund, Hagman, Kolnik, and Nedorost to $1,000,000 contracts. (Just for the sake of overshooting).

Let's say we pay Weiss, JayBo, Van Ryn, and Huselius $2,000,000 contracts.

Let's say we pay Luongo $5,000,000.

That's a current payroll of $27,000,000. It'll probably be quite a bit less considering I was intentionally overpricing most of our RFA's.

That means we have room for at least 1 or 2 more quality, impact players while staying around $30 Mill. (I'm sure Cohen will let Keenan float 1 or 2 mill over the budget.)

2 things.

1) Name 1 key forward and one key defenceman available that we should pick up for that price... Just under $3,000,000 a piece.

2) Try and guesstimate what our RFA's will REALLY be signing for. We all know that players like Berglund will be making much less than $1,000,000.

Let the begin.

Clint: You're forgetting 2 things ..

1) We still need to sign Jokinen on that list. He'll probably command about $3.5MM based on your estimates. That puts us at $30.5MM leaving around $1.5MM-$2MM left for other players
2) We actually have $11.2MM tied up. Tsn's math is a bit off so we're at $31.4MM with those numbers.

EDIT: That gives us 20 players for that budget. Aren't rosters 23 players?

First of all...I think we'll get Luongo for $4M. Call it a hunch.
Jokinen, as was said, probably $3.5M.
Berglund - $525k
Hagman - $750k if he's resigned
Kolnik - $750k
Nedorost - $400k if he's resigned

mind you, I don't know what they were qualified at, so these could be low if under the qualifying offers.

Weiss - $1.25M
Van Ryn - $1.5M
Bouwmeester - $1.5M
Huselius - $1.25M

So:
$10.3M
7.5M
~2.5M
5.5M
-----------
$25.8

But I'm sure people will say players will get more. But please remember that, regardless of who you are, all of this is guesswork until signings are announced (unless you're eticket, who knows Cohen ).

Acadmus, you're at least off by 50k since Nederost cannot receive less than 450k (minimum salary)

Wow... I'm totally amazed that TSN (and I) forgot about Jokinen.

Still, I assume that there will still be room for two more key player acquisitions.

It just seems that as the days go by, the availability of worthwhile Free Agents keeps dwindling down until there are no key players availabe.

Too bad Keenan apparently didn't realize that.

Or maybe he did.

People got to remeber every player got pretty much a year off to rest, injuries will happen but to a less extent then years previous, so I say take a gamble on Lindros or Stevens maybe both but the price has to be right and we have to get Bondra and Hamrik, those two have to come first.

I think picking those two up would make me feel ALOT better going into this season of uncertainty.

That would be sweet to see Stevens and Bouwmeester, geez that would be crazy. He would learn so much and hopefully become what Stevens was in his prime.

A physical, non-scoring defenseman?

Anyway...I think it's rather significant that, at this point, no one has signed Stevens. I'm of the thought that he's not intending to come back.

You may want to utilize this to help figure out qualifying offers, etc. BTW, Kolnik signed a $440K/1 yr contract before the lockout. Van Ryn signed a 1 yr deal for $1.4 million before the lockout as well. And agents are now looking at the deal that Nash & Hejduk got to help in negotiations...figure on Jokinen now making $4 mil.

A year off from injury will help something like Horton has with the shoulder, or Pronger had with the wrist. But what Eric Lindros suffers from will never go away, and its my reasoning why Olesz was a bad pick. Lindros suffers from a soft cranium now, after countless concussions. With each concussion, the successive ones get easier to recieve and more damaging. Lindros is not someone I'd want on my team, for that sole reason. Robbie Neidermayer has had to scale back his style of play for that same reason. Lindros' brother had to retire for that reason. Adam Deadmarsh has missed almost two seasons due to post-concussion sydrome, and you don't see anyone running out and signing him. And if I remember correctly, Stevens last went out with a concussion himself. He'd be a perfect pairing for Bouwmeester, but I don't know if he's capable of playing the same style of game anymore.

absolutely in the inspirational leader way. plus he's a conn smythe winner who sticks up for his teammates and hits the crap out of everything. without taking himself out of position. without taking a penalty. without falling on his own goalie while taking a high sticking minor for swinging at empty air where a smaller player was 35 seconds earlier (wait, we bought that guy out).

larry murphy didnt score a ton of points and couldnt skate all that well and hes in the hall of fame...

if hes cheap and over his health problems why not???

He was signed for a shade under $1.9M for 2 seasons. He gets $925k the first season, $950k the second.
