Bobby Orr was the greatest defensive player in the history of the game. Do you know why? Nobody could get the damn puck away from him! I think that is the logic Mario is applying here. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

I'm pretty much in absolute shock right now. I thought this had absolutely NO chance of happening. Even from the beginning of free agency, I thought all along the only forward we'd have a serious chance at would be Kovalev.

I'm more surprised at this than I was with Gonchar (which came out of nowhere) and winning the lottery combined.

Exactly. Taking too many penalties against this team will be suicide. Both powerplay units will be awesome. I actually was hoping for Palffy to go to Pittsburgh. This team is going to score a lot this year. Palffy has never played with anyone like Lemieux.

looks like CP and the rest of managment is trying to recreate the 90's Pens: outscore everyone and worry about defense later. Problem is, if the rules don;t open up the game at all...

Hopefully this doesn't restrict the Penguins when pursuing a goaltender, because if they don't get a vet in there, all this money will be wasted.

Cool.

But I still can't believe that they only sign offensive-oriented FAs (Recchi, Palffy, Gonchar). But they deserve same great FA signings. How many good players did they loose and how many good player did they get ?

I doubt he'd sign for cheap. There was enough interest out there that he would get the going rate for a forward like him...which is about $4 million.

Pens should really go HARD after Cujo IMO. He'd be the perfect fit for this team. A team that scores a ton of goals but also gives up a ton of chances.

4.5 a year....that seems the going rate for a 1st line winger

I consider CP a smart man. He's not Glen Sather. He has a plan to get a veteran goalie. Afterall, they wouldn't sign all these high caliber players and not address goaltending (and players wouldn't sign there if they didn't have a plan either)

I thought I heard 13.5 million. As for no defense, it's not like the season starts today. Let's see how it plays out before we say the Pens have no defense.

Actually, a little-known provision of the CBA is that along with a salary cap, there is also a talent cap governing who you can put on the ice at once. This actually means that the Pens will have to put a pylon out on their power play rather than a 5th skater.

I'd expect them to camp the pylon out in front of the net, and Mario, Ziggy and Crosby will take turns banking the puck off the pylon into the net. It is expected that this will be the first time that an inanimate object will lead the league in power play goals......

Dear God...YES!

Man...the Pens power play was already unstoppable. Now this...our second unit is going to be better than most's first...

Lemieux-Crosby-Palffy
Tarnstrom-Gonchar

Malone-Malkin(?)-Malone
Tarnstrom-Whitney

Found that funny too after last seasons reports that the Pens may have to relocare.

But I think they did have about a 30 mil payroll last season so it is reasonable.

So Tarnstrom gets double-shifted, and Malone gets cloned?

The pens having to relocate is based more on the fact that they can't get funding for a new arena.

WOW Palffy is twice the player Kariya or Satan is at the same price! Im amazed he signed for $4.5 when the Kings offered him $7 last year, I also think they offered him in the $5-6 range recently as well.

Its going to be like going back into an 80s timewarp in Pittsburgh, all offense and no D or goaltending.
