We've got 2 and a half lines going at the moment. the 3rd, the 4th, and Nash. 2 weeks ago, that 2nd line that's been awful lately was goal a game for something like 7 games.

If the 2012 Devils can make the finals, I'll believe anything.

I commend you for that.

Just think you should know more than that by now.

The more and more I think about this, I don't get how letting other teams talk to Callahan is good for the rangers. He is a UFA come summer..... so why would any team try to get him to agree to a contract and give up assets in a trade, when hey can just wait until free agency and get him with nothing more than money being spent.

To me, I would think that sather should be on the phone ( not Callahan and his agent ) with some teams that would agree to taking on callahan at 7 years / 6mill. If an agreement can be made with another team, have sather sign him and them immediately trade him to that team. That way, Callahan has no say in where he goes and the rangers get the best return of assets possible based on how bad one of these teams wants him. There for, guaranteeing said team gets Callahan instead of possibly losing out come free agency and so that the rangers get quality assets in return.

Am I wrong with my logic?

Enough trades with Columbus have happened to fill the quota for the next decade.

By "for the next decade", I'm assuming you mean "forever, unless they want Brassard and Dorsset back for Dubi".

Of all the teams Sather could decide to swap half of his roster with, why, why Columbus....

Just because the Rangers have traded for all their overrated and lazy players doesn't mean they don't have any actually valuable players to trade for.

I don't care who they trade with as long as they get back fair value.

At this point, I think we've seen more "unlikely cup winners" than "legit contender wins the cup".

Except the Blackhawks.

Kings were an 8th seed, (and for those who don't remember, there was doubt of Brown's Captain abilities EVERY SINGLE DAY up until that cup win.) Devils made the finals. Bruins were either a 3rd or a 4th seed (I don't really remember).

I think it's more about teams willing to give up more assets to get him because they can sign him long term instead of having him solely as a rental -AND- the ability to throw him in the lineup right now.

What about Anisimov, Dalton Prout and a first rounder?

For Callahan? Done. Shores up 3C, doubt we'd get that much, though.

I don't get the affair with Anisimov. He's big, but enigmatic, and slightly above average at best. I wouldn't trade anything of value for him.

Agreed, no more BJs. They do have some nice young pieces in Jenner, Atkinson, Murray, and obviously Johansen but I doubt they are available. Don't think ex-Rangers are on the table either. That leaves Umbeger, Letestu, JJ, Foligno, etc. - no thanks. On to the next team.

But that's the point.....callahan and his agent might decide not to play ball. They will just wait till free agency and sign anywhere he wants. If sather signs and trades.....Callahan has no say in the process and the rangers get assets in return. Callahan would immediately play for the team he is traded to and the rangers get assets in return, ( greater assets than Callahan being traded as a rental. )

I'd like Foligno, but not for Callahan

However, if Callahan wants what he wants (7x6M) and a team will give that to him, tomorrow in a trade, he HAS to make that move, no? What if he gets a career threatening injury? Gets a concussion? Knee surgery? If he can get the deal that he wants, there's no reason to "wait til free agency". It would be foolishly risky to do so.

It's also presumed that the teams his agent are talking to are teams he might want to play for. Bidding wars in July don't necessarily mean it's a team he wants to be on.

How about if every team tells him he's nucking futs for asking for what he's asking and he decides the Rangers offer is better than he thought?

What happens if the deal(s) fall apart? And Callahan will probably demand some kind of no-trade/no-movement clause in his next contract--Rangers would not be able to provide that and still trade him.

Also, I don't think you understand that when another team is allowed to talk to a player like Callahan about a long term contract--there will already be an agreement in place when he's traded. Signing an extension would become part of the deal the Rangers made--if Callahan suddenly decides not honor the agreement he (and his agent) worked out, the trade would be voided.

Why do the Rangers want Anisimov? He is a good 3rd line center. Not physical. Skates with his head down too much. He will be overpaid if he stays in NA as he has KHL options.

The Rangers desperately need a high end center prospect. They need this deal to include a player like Brayden Schenn was. Or to have a team include a high enough pick to get a high end C.

They need to add size and some nastiness to the top 9. The player needs to be able to skate well in this system. McGinn? Could Stewart be that player?

That's my take.

You folks haven't seen Foligno play enough if you're not interested.

We're almost even in the standing with Columbus. We're bargaining with an impending UFA who is probably our 6th best forward, and somehow the only acceptable return is Columbus's 21 year old best forward.

Foligno is 23 and one of the elite 3rd line type players out there.

I agree, (based on what you have described) Ryan O'Reilly would be the perfect addition.

I have been banging the drum for Linden Vey because he is the only potential high end C you might be able to get on a team hypothetically interested in Callahan.

Rolling the dice on Stewart seems to be the most likely option. Their first, or more likely Edmonton's 2nd from the Perron trade would represent as good of a chance as any to draft a C, with the Rangers pick, or using both to move up.

Whole thing has my head spinning though. Columbus is in but I would hate to go into that well again considering what would not be available. The more teams that are available the better though.

Foligno is 26 and would hardly be an upgrade on Hagelin.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Buffalo Foligno?

I think Columbus Foligno as a centerpiece for Callahan would be very disappointing, and it would be ludicrous in general to trade him not only in the division, but to a team that they are fighting for playoff position with.
