Cowen making mistakes at 23 doesn't mean he's brain dead. My point was that at that age Chara (not sure about Weber) wasn't much better and look where he ended up. Cowen will learn, hopefully, and if he doesn't show improvement over the next year or two, then we can move on.
It's ridiculous to compare Cowen to Chara. He will never be that good. End of story.

I think Cowen can be a very good #3 in his prime on a good team (like Ottawa will be). He's struggled at times, but he has good tools and has been improving this year for the most part. The comparisons of Cowen to Chara have been happening since he was drafted here and they're pretty silly. Chara is an anomaly.

I hope Hoffman gets another chance in Ottawa. He's supremely talented.

Hoffman - Da Costa - Zibanejad would be nice to watch. =3

Driedger suspended by the team for disciplinary reasons.

Go find people that thought Chara would become as good as he became. Not a long list. Not that Cowen will be as good, but young players develop, That's what they do.

He won't be nearly as good as Chara. Chara is top 5 in the league, and has been for a long time. And not all young players develop. Some plateau at a very young age.

Point is, it's silly to predict either way. Better to be patient, too many young defencemen in the past have needed development time before blossoming to not be.

Besides, we've seen him be absolutely dominant in games before, so we know he has it in him. Finding consistency and confidence is the next step. And I think age and experience are what's needed. It's not like he's Brian Lee, or ever will be.

He got a strong commitment from the team this fall in terms of contract, I imagine he'll show his commitment back to the team by working his ash off.

No but we did see him at age 24 -- his first full season with the Sens. Don't know whether he was "elite" or not, but he was clearly very very very good. I remember talking to multiple hardcore Sens fans that year and the general sentiment (myself included) was that even if the trade had been Yashin for Chara straight up, we would have been happy with it.

If Cowen jumps to that level of play next year (his 23/24 yr old season), I'll be shocked. Happy, but shocked.

Not every first rounder is going to end up a #1 line player, if he ends up being a good NHL defenceman for us in any capacity, it's a draft win. He already has top 4 skills, two years in and I'd say he's doing well...

I think Cowen can make a good jump within the next 2 years. He missed a lot of playing time over the past few seasons, and it's set him back.

Chara also has an insane work ethic that, while I know we don't get to see, I don't know Cowen has.

I see someone either didn't watch chara pre sens or is choosing to ignore it to suit an argument. He may never be that good but he has played better than big z did at this stage of his career. End of story.

Just dropping by to say that Lazar will be really, really good for you guys. I live in Edmonton and have seen his development over the last few years. He's probably not going to be a star but he'll be a fan favorite. He's fast, strong, very physical, and good offensively and defensively. He's going to be the type of guy who makes a living in the playoffs. I don't know what the general consensus is on him on this board but he will be a good player.

Consensus is pretty broad. Anywhere from 1B Center to 3rd line all-around winger.

What do you see his potential as? From what I've seen 60 point 2nd line center(technically 1b) with all-around play could be his best.
