Girardi contract may not get done this week; trade still possible

Quote:
“The Rangers are still trying to lock down Dan Girardi. There is a chance….a chance that it happens this week. If Girardi doesn’t come to terms this week then it sends a tough sign to the Rangers because he has earned UFA rights and he may be willing to wait until July 1 but that could throw him into the group of speculation with Ryan Callahan on the trade front.”
Wonder how this impacts Callahan.

I don't think it does; paying Callahan the rumored asking price isn't a good move for the Rangers regardless of what happens with Dan Girardi.

Not if you believe you can sign him to an extension. Sure, it's a risky move (see Garth Snow)...but man, I gotta believe if you offered him a healthy pay raise to play alongside Ryan Suter he might just take it.

Well Dumba is the kind of dman the Rangers don't have in the system, so I'd do it.

Curious, does anyone know what the latest draft pick year you can trade away? As in it being 2014, could you trade away a 2017, 18 etc/

Is there a rule or do teams just not do it due to them not knowing what'll happen down the road?

Girardi isn't in the same league as Vanek though. Girardi has a great goalie behind him (as a defenseman, Vanek has Miller behind him but that's besides the point), and a great partner who makes him look really good. I'm sure the Rangers are offering Girardi what he's worth, but he thinks he's worth more, so he's going to go find a team that will severely damage themselves by overpaying for him. I don't think the Rangers are offering any less than 4.5-5 million for him. If that's the case, and the Rangers won't pay him, he'll just go elsewhere to find the money. That being said, I'd want to see comparable trades. Kaberle got a late first, a conditional late 2nd and a busting prospect, and he was more established than Girardi, even if he was older. Therefore, Girardi won't be getting anything near Dumba and a 1st even if you offer a 3rd with it. That being said, I do think he may be able to get a late first and maybe a busting prospect from a team that thinks they have a good shot at signing him and may be willing to take the risk of him sucking for 5 years. However, that's probably the high end of the range, and anything more than that would be major overpayment for Girardi as a UFA, probably even Girardi in general. I think if you get a conditional 2nd round pick which becomes a 1st, maybe a decent prospect who fell out of the system, that's more of the range you'll find Girardi in, due to teams probably overpaying for him.

If it was up to me, and I were the Leafs making an offer, I would only offer Franson and maybe 2 obsolete prospects who are decent but at the bottom of our depth chart. I don't want Girardi on the Leafs, so that may or may not be underpayment. However that's all I'd give, if not less. Girardi strikes me as a potential bust candidate, resembling a Wade Redden-type situation. I think that's why the Rangers are treading lightly with what they're willing to give for him.

That's a lot of money for a him. If you're willing to risk a David Clarkson of this year, go for it. Otherwise, ask for either shorter term, or less money (or at least .5 mill less a year and a front loaded contract).

Comparing every potential UFA to Clarkson is hilarious. Girardi has consistently been a top pairing dman for us his entire career. Clarkson put up 2nd line production for 1 year.

There is no comparison to be made.

Lol really? Wow wild fans you can have him! Has Dumba fallen off? I remember wanting Dumba over Lindholm. Seems like I owe Murray an apology for that one...

The money and term Girardi wants are not absurd like Callahan's are, at this point id honestly be shocked if he's traded.

They're too close to not come to terms on a deal.

The Rangers should just focus on getting Girardi signed, forget Callahan. His asking price is absurd to be quite honest. He's asking for 6.5 -7 million on a 7 year deal!!! WTF! I'm not a Rangers fan but to me that is insane money for him. I guess he's going to Buffalo in the summer because I'm not sure if a contending team has that much cap space and are willing to do both term and money. Callahan will get moved to St.Louis as a rental, Stewart will be part of that deal, Callahan signs in Buffalo in July.

Girardi will re-sign before the deadline. Sather has to get Girardi signed, Callahan is long gone.

The Caps would like to make an offer to both Girardi and Vanek ... not as rentals but long term

I just wonder if our lame GM will pursue an opportunity to do so and whether either would listen

Not interested unless u pony up big time.

Girardi is a ridiculously durable, top pairing RHD. You want a signed Girardi as well?

Seeing how we always play vs Caps in the playoffs it would cost u extra.

Kuznetsov, Carlson, Green is the only pieces of interest. Need RHD coming back or a stud fwd prospect like Kuz.

You already got Carlson and Green on the right side. Maybe shore up the left side and give Alzner some minutes off.
