Get LA's first and second rounders, then make a deal with the Islanders for Vanek and give him all the money in Canada (tho it's rumored Vanek wants to live in Minnesota).

That's because they didn't keep track of the play of the Devils and especially the Kings. The then-Atlantic division was tight and they Devils kept pace with the other competitors. Sutter and Carter fixed up the Kings. They got rid of Mr. Dump and Chase Terry Murray(sounds like Therrien) and Carter helped get everyone a proper role. The Kings had a elite goalie and they had a deep, solid D corps.

We would not pull off such a turnaround. No puck possession coaches in the bilingual talent pool and no Jeff Carter. Hell, we don't even have Kovalchuk and Parise in our team.

Yeah cause Sutter isn't a dump and chase coach.

Get a bidding war going in the West between the Kings, Sharks, Avs & Ducks - they all might not need Markov but what would they pay to block another team from getting him knowing that whoever wins their conference should have a free pass to the Cup

It's not the time to get emotionnal with Markov.

The guy has been a Hab for a long time, and he served us nicely. He's been a PP specialist for many years and helped us win many games.

But he has become a liability. Markov is not getting younger and you have to think that all the injuries he suffered are going to affect his play. He's already slower than he was before, and is getting some average performances with all the fatigue a player accumulates during a season.

Add that to the fact that he's UFA at the end of the season and to me, he's trading material.

Bad idea. You don't start bragging of another team's proposal to a third team. That only shows you as a bad trade partner.

ESPN did it for Bergevin. They reported the players allegedly being discussed. Now any team interested knows the cost and can measure their offer against what has been suggested.

That's a "leak", which is acceptable.

But you don't go actively create a bidding war

That's exactly what they do, they just do it via email, telephone calls and lying. You have to remember some of of the best GM's have a background as lawyers and negotiations and tactics are the root of it.

Lombardi - Lawyer
Burke - Lawyer
Chiarelli - Lawyer
Chuck Fletcher - Harvard grad (not law though)
Mike Gillis - Law degree
etc

Not as many as I intially thought and although a lot are former players you learn to negotiate like these men eventually or you get eaten alive.

The point is; a good GM shouldn't antagonize his fellow GMs. If you do manage to create a bidding war, you gotta do it without other GMs felling cheated in a way they won't bid with you in the future.

Every 'leak' is intentional in pro sports. Intentional and calculated.

Doesn't mean he knows how to negotiate although he has Dudley who should know how to by now.

You can have all the hockey knowledge in the world but being a GM is about business acumen and negotiation skills just as much as it is talent evaluation.

still, doesnt change the fact that trying to insult someone cause he accomplished more than the vast majority despite having a smaller toolbox (in his case, diploma) is ******** at best.

To be honest, I don't know that much about Pearson and Clifford.

Previous reports talked about Toffoli for Markov.
The wrong message would be to stay the course.
To keep trying the same strategy and expecting different results is an effort in futility.
