What this thread makes me understand is that people dont see the value in trading players for return. People rather have veterans on our team and keep on being a bubble team instead of getting talent back. Look at when we sold Gill and Andrei K, don't see people complaining about that....

At the TDL you dont know what can happen, Morrow and Murray both fetched way more than we thought.

Since you're so well plugged in, who is NYI getting back?

I don't see Minnesota wanting him for anything more than a rental. Even at that it's poor cap allocation with the sad state of their defense.

If you have 5.5 million free and your top, Norris caliber D-Man wants 9 Mill you give it to him. Especially with that extra 5.5 mill.

AK and Gill got good returns losing them was not that big of deal. Trading Markov is a huge void on the defense. Better get a real good forward to make up for the loss. Markov is worth a Toffoli, if a team wants a number 1 PP specialist that is also good defensively you have to pay. Montreal is not forced to trade Markov he even said he is interested in resigning and retiring a Hab.

What the heck is the point of the Habs moving their #2 d-man for scubs?

If you can't get anything good, then keep him and sign him, not like we have somebody to replace him anyways.

Guys like Clifford are dime a dozen players. LA doesn't have much in the pipeline other than Toffoli, maybe Fasching, but he is 2-3 years away...

That is fine, but at a certain point you need to get value for someone like Markov. It is no secret that the Habs wont win the cup when he is still with us. As for Toffoli, you are right we would need someone in that mold coming back.

Pierre McGuire said on the radio that Vanek is going to Minnesota and it's all but certain. He's turned down a massive deal from Buffalo (10M/Y) and 7/50 from the NYI and has said publicly that he knows he's leaving money on the table but wants to go to Free Agency.

Wife from Minnesota
Went to University in Minnesota
House is in Minnesota
Training and Medical staff he uses is in Minnesota
Dany Heatley's contract is coming off the books after this season.

Just too many variables for it to not happen.

They'll sign him in the off season, doubtful they'll trade for him.

Considering our top 6

Pacioretty 6'2" 200lbs - Desharnais 5'6" 170lbs - Gallagher 5'9" 180lbs
Galchenyuk 6'2" 205lbs - Plekanec 5'10" 200lbs - Gionta 5'7" 180lbs
Briere 5'9" 180lbs

Our bottom 6 would be built for the playoffs. Definitely protect our smaller forwards in our top 6.

Clifford 6'2" 210lbs - Eller 6'2" 215lbs - Bournival 6'0" 200lbs
Prust 6'0" 200lbs - White 6'0" 200lbs - Moen 6'2" 220lbs
Weise 6'2" 210lbs - Bourque 6'2" 210lbs

----------------------------------------------------

2-3 years down the road: The size grinding team
Pacioretty 6'2" 200lbs - Galchenyuk 6'2" 205lbs - Gallagher 5'9" 180lbs
Pearson 6'0" 200lbs - Plekanec 5'10" 200lbs - McCarron 6'5" 240lbs
Clifford 6'2" 210lbs - Eller 6'2" 215lbs - Bournival 6'0" 200lbs
Prust 6'0" 200lbs - De La Rose 6'3" 200lbs - Moen 6'2" 220lbs
White 6'0" 200lbs - Weise 6'2" 210lbs

Beaulieu 6'2" 200lbs - Subban 6'0" 210lbs
Gorges 6'1" 200lbs - Emelin 6'2" 210lbs
Tinordi 6'7" 240lbs - Pateryn 6'3" 220lbs
Ellis 6'2" 200lbs (if he gets his act together)

Price 6'3" 220lbs
Budaj 6'1" 200lbs

Scoring might be a problem.

Not to mention we were a lottery team at that time last year, or close to it...people seem to forget that despite how we've been playing, we're actually still in the playoffs.

There aren't a lot of GMs (or their owners) who will give up on a shot at the playoffs, even if it's against the team's long-term interests.

I don't have a problem with trading Markov per se, I just wish we had more certainty in the return...

Toffoli would be nice that's for sure.

We will grind our way to the Cup. You need a team with a better mix. Are we starting to fill up that team with grinders 'cause we don't have any but then.....realize we're missing top end talent and will then whine about that later? Then, good luck trying to trade grinders for top end talent. Markov is still a top end talent that has seen his better days but could help greatly a team close to the cup and for at least 2 other years after that if he's signed...there's NO WAY that the best piece of that trade coming back here is a freakin grinder. Whether he's Young or not, I don't care, I still believe we are at least 2 or 3 years from really being a contender.

Pearson and a 1st, im happy with that. Markov's pretty much done. IMO he has a good 2 years left in him. Clifford's a big body at 23 years of age. If we do acquire him our bottom 6 is gonna look a whole lot different next year.

Habs are really a bubble team right now for the playoffs run. (these three lost points over the weekend are really killing them).

At trade deadline, they might be many points out of it if they continue playing like they're doing since 4-5 weeks.

At that point, and only then, they should consider trading Markov.

YESSSS, I knew it !! Now, bring me back a 1st + Prokhorkin/Zykov, Bergevin !!!

Edit: Pearson is an interesting prospect too and adding Clifford is just icing on the cake.
