Here are the current cap space figures for those teams labeled as buyers.

I get the feeling that Dallas will buy rather than sell. Not that they have a great shot this season but they are on the upswing and if they add a nice piece it could set them up for the future. Plus they have space and they are one hot streak away from giving the wild card teams some trouble.

Dallas are four points behind Vancouver with two games in hand. They are three points behind Phoenix with no games in hand but they play Coyotes two times before the Olympic break.

Dallas could be right back in the playoff race at the end of the week.

I was just checking out the Habs board and apparently on ESPN radio they said we, along with LA and San Jose, are looking at Markov.

Garrioch is on par with most of the idiots who make trade proposals in the trade forum.

They do have a bit of wiggle room to do so, with cap space of about $2.4 million.

Also so nice to see those numbers with Colorado absolutely DESTROYING it when it comes to salary spent to build a (potential) playoff team. By no means I want them to spend it, but it's nice to see they could potentially have 20 more points than Washington going into the break, which is a team that has a payroll about $13 million higher than Colorado.

I hope we look, but don't touch. I feel that he's too offensive minded and we need to get more defensively sound guys moving forward.

Dallas has given no indication that they will buy. Plus, being in the central they have no shot at the top 3 spots. The cap space is going to be an issue, but a number of teams can make moves to make things work.

According to capgeek the teams can take on this cap hit now until the end of the year:

Avalanche 34.2M
Ducks 6.0m
Blackhawks 495k
Blues 852k
Sharks 1.4m
Kings 1.45m
Penguins 1.1m
Bruins 1.6m
Lightning 3.8m
Devils 4.7m
Blue Jackets 642k
Rangers 4.9m
Maple Leafs 1.6m
Red Wings 1.6m
Flyers 2.9m

He would be a good get if he wasn't too expensive.

avs have more cap space than kings or sharks.

i think kings need more scoring. yeah markov helps there, but if i were kings, i'd look for forwards.

sharks might be looking at him though. they could really use guy like markov. and probably more wiling to pay the price than the avs.

If the Sharks are interested in Markov that tells me they're hedging their bets on re-signing Boyle.

Markov is actually quite good defensively. He's far, far more than just a puckmover. Unfortunately he's on the decline, I'd be very reluctant to sign him to big money, and he won't come cheap in a trade either.

My hope for a defensive upgrade is a case where the Avs look to deal for a pending UFA defenseman that would cost them less than a pure 'hockey trade'. Examples would be NYI or NYR looking to move MacDonald or Girardi, respectively.

For example, I suppose the Avs COULD make a play for a franchise type guy like Subban but, let's face it, that costs you O'Reilly or, at best, Parenteau, Barrie, and probably another prospect and a pick the other way. But a guy who could bolt this summer would cost them a good prospect and a pick (conditional or otherwise), or maybe a lower-end roster player. Then you hope with cap space and the fact that the Avs have a very strong core that the guy you picked up will stick around.

I disagree, he'd be great next to EJ and give us a top tier PP. I'd love Markov but I don't know what we'd have to give up to get him that wouldn't hurt us.

If the term is right, 3 years, I have no problem paying Markov handsomely, he'd be a great get for this team if the trade cost isn't too steep.

Although I agree that it would allow us to spread out the talent in our D corps (Hejda being able to pilot the 2nd pairing is a comforting thought) I feel that asking price would be too high in respect to the overall picture. Giving up trade assets for a 35 year old d-man is something that would be a temporary fix and we'd be giving up assets we COULD be using for a long-term solution to get him. I say unless it's the equivalent of table-scraps (which I can't see being the case because of the demand) I wouldn't want in on it. I say this trade makes more sense for a team like San Jose who has expiring assets like Thornton and Marleau, because they're making that big push. I'd rather save these trade assets and go for a guy like Girardi, or trade a much lower amount of assets to bring in a guy like Phillips.

As I mentioned in the prospects forum, I bet if Buffalo doesn't bring Frederick Roy back to Rochester that Patty will give his son a spot on Lake Erie. Anybody else think that way or just me?

Put me down for one Markov please.
Elliot and a 2nd, maybe 1st?

E: I know it'd just be a rental, but he would make our D much, much better and I've been a big fan for years...

That's an awful lot to give up for a guy when we're simply contenders for the playoffs and not the cup. Not to mention I'd hope, unless I'm missing something, that this would be a giant overpayment on our part. I'd MAYBE give this up for Gorges, who would be much more than a couple year fix.

I would like a trade with Parenteau go back to the islanders for guy like MacDonald +
or C. De Haaan

Good young defensive corp to come
Reinhart
De Haaan
Harmonic

Interesting for Islanders

Doubt that happens. They let Parenteau walk for nothing before, and they're not hurting for goals.

Which of the Penguins defensemen would interest Colorado the most? Pittsburgh needs forwards and the Avalanche have a few they could use.
