Crazy things happen when a player hits the open market in July. I bet Bolland could sign a $25 million dollar deal in July if he wasn't picky about where he goes.

Will always be a fan of Bolland's. Hope he cashes in this free agency regardless of what team he ends up with. With his injury history you never know how long a career will last.

unless it's a mid 1st or more there is no reason to trade him.

Bieksa is exactly what the Leafs need, Id easily do a Gardiner Bieksa swap Canucks fan would be right in telling me they'd be getting hosed. My only reservations in the proposal is any movement of Bolland, thus in regards to the main topic of this thread I pray to God this isn't true.

I don't think salary is that big a problem with Bolland. Term is. He's had a lot of injury problems and for a guy that's not the greatest skater this injury was bad news. It might take quite some time before he's back to being useful.

While I have no doubt Leafs are trying to use the media here, they realize Bolland is in control of the situation. They're not going to be able to use reverse psychology on him to trick him into taking a discount. He'll take one if he wants to play in Toronto badly enough.

I personally think Bolland ends up re-signing with the Leafs. Also considering he is from the Toronto area I don't think he wants his one and only season with the Leafs to be remembered with him being injured for the majority of it. Not saying it means he takes a hometown discount, I just think that might also play a factor into him wanting to return.

Trading anyone is a real possibility if all the other options fail.

As a Leaf fan, that contract was VERY upsetting to see. We had FINALLY unloaded most of our bad contracts (Grabo, Komi, Lombardi, and Connolly).

Just to go out and throw an even worse contract at Clarkson. I cant understand it, i cant understand how a management group made up of multiple people who are cumulatively paid as much or more than any other group in the league... Thought that contract was a good idea.

Maybe if he was an elite PK specialist as well.. But he's not. He doesnt play the PK! His intangibles are pretty overblown IMO.

Bolland is the one UFA that Nonis needs to hang onto. What is your C depth like, hm?

Trading Bolland, especially for less than he was acquired for, is going to produce an uproar from the fan base. Not only did he play exceptionally before he went down with the freak tendon injury, he was one of the cornerstone off-season acquisitions. Your not going to look very good trading for a player, knowing full well he is an upcoming UFA, then six months later trading that very player because you can't get a contract done.

Letting him walk will be even worse. Nonis will then have ponied up a collection of picks for 30-some games of David Bolland, when the team is not yet a contender.

Signing him, then, is no doubt the goal. But what if Bolland is asking for $4+ million a season? David Clarkson is already a third liner tying up $5.25 million, it isn't wise to tie up that kind of cap space in your third line.

To summarize, Nonis is in a very difficult spot, mostly of his own making.

Bolland is worth 4million. Against the cap itll be 3 with all of the injuries which is certainly fair for what he brings.

Nonis should move him if he's considering an extension. He's not a 2c and it's probably going to be a bad gamble on his health. Bolland is 29 in July. 4.5ish for too many years is probably a really bad idea especially if they're fighting for a playoff spot. I think Nonis should get what he can now.

Where have we heard this before?

Nonis knows what he is doing.

Would be a weird move. He's a nice piece for the Leafs. I'd be pushing to re-sign him.

This rumour is probably just a ploy by Nonis to try and starting a bidding war for Bolland to see if a team will overpay - not to say he'd pull the trigger on a trade, but if contract negotiations have gone stale it would be beneficial for Nonis to build up as much market value for Bolland as possible before the deadline

Personally I'd rather keep Bolland if possible, but not at a high $$

Dreger is out to lunch on this one, or Nonis is just feeding him info because they are related.

Bolland is a player you sign, he's a player you win with. He reminds me of Patrice Bergeron, alwasy seems to play his best when the game is on the line. He'll sign and he'll get huge dollars and term.

What if he wants 4.5-5 million per?

Let's trade pretty much all of our FA's though, except for Gardiner and Reimer (who can be traded in the offseason possibly) and any of our young RFA's unless they're add on pieces (so let's not shop them). Brennan and Abbott are probably the only ones who would be shopped.
I sure would be, unless he has the worst agent in sports or something.

Think the Bozak contract is a more realistic starting point.

Bozak has proved his worth with his contract though. However I'd be shocked to see Bollands go that low. Id assume a short term deal because of his injury history (3-4 years) and a slight raise on what he is currently making. Id guess 4 mill on a 3-4 year deal.

This is so misleading.

Dreger had the trade option as his most unlikely of possibilities

I thought the Leafs picked up Bolland mainly for the post season ...he will help any team in the post season far more than his regular season worth.

...mind you, it always depends on the return.

This is a really frustrating trade rumour.

I just can't see the leafs moving him.

They need him badly.
