Spectacular Olympics so far for Canada. They're picking up medals from unexpected places, they're picking up multiple medals in sports where it was generally thought they might only get 1, and they have a number of 4/5th place finishes which bodes well for the future.

They have a chance at doubles luge coming up.

I've heard this several times, but wasn't able to watch the event this morning. Does anyone know the full story with this? Why was it necessary for a guy to give up his spot so that a silver medalist could participate?

Morrison fell in the Canadian trials and didn't earn a spot in the event.

heres a quote from the skater who gave up his spot :

Quote:
Morrison was not initially on the roster for the race, after falling during the Canadian Olympic team trials. Teammate Gilmore Junio announced yesterday that he was giving up his spot in the event to enable Morrison to compete, saying, "how Denny is skating now, I believe its in the best interest of the team if he races."

Can anyone confirm....is there a relay event in longtrack? Would love to see Morrison and Junio both compete there.

Damned that was close, 4th in the slightly awkward double luge. Missed out on Bronze by 0.05 Seconds, wow.

That is a very awkward sport.

Any other possible medals today?

Pairs Figure Skating, they're doing the free skate, and though it's not "highly" likely, it's possible, still to Skate Canada has Radford/Duhamel and Moscovish/Moore-Towers. They qualified 7th and 8th repectively, so we'll just have to hope a winter miracle.

There are team pursuits for both men and women. They go Friday and Saturday next week. I'd be looking for the Dutch to do well.

Goal changed to Karlsson (1) from Ekman Larsson and Steen.

Berglund (1) from Ekman-Larsson and the assist scoring machine Lundqvist.

Sweden up 2-0.

EDIT: and for those of you who are on Nedvedwatch, he's already -1.

They're not playing Hemsky or Hanzal at all.

Really odd considering the quality of a lot of the forwards on their roster.

I think Hanzal is out today.

But Hemsky could arguably be playing over Palat, Erat, Frolik, Nedved.

That OEL-Karlsson pairing is something else.

This is not arguable. This should be fact. Hemsky >> Nedved. He was a couple of years back when they were both playing for the Oil!

OEL-Karlsson are incredible. Just wow.

----------

Pairs free skating - we're going to need two major slip ups from 2 and 3 to get a chance at gold. 202.10 from Moores-Towers/Moscovitch, which is competitive, but nothing compared to the top 3's top scoring ability.

Here's the thing with OEL-Karlsson....Americans and Canadians have the size and forward depth to hem those guys in their zone. That combo is high-risk/high-reward.

I'd be shocked if they don't eventually split those 2 up
