Cheering for the Oilers or NHL team is completely different than watching the Olympics.

I'm pretty sure nobody is going to walk up to Chan and call him an embarrassment. That would be pathetic and completely uncalled for.

Stating that he choked on a message board is a far cry from that. I'm sure he's very disappointed that he didn't win Gold, so are Canadians who watch the Olympics. He doesn't deserve scorn for his performance (I think everyone in here is still happy he got silver at least), but at the same time we don't need to start patting everyone on the back and saying results don't matter. He's not 8 years old. Results most certainly do matter, the entire concept of sport is based around them.

Rochette or whatever taking a shot at Chan....completely and utterly classless.

I guess Rochette doesn't remember that she only got a medal because of pity after her mothers death....yes i said it.

Probably better to just be talking about the Olympics than what he said she said. These people represent our nation while we're sitting here hammering on a messageboard.

Anyway.

Canada kind of in a dry spell last number of days but good returns likely on the team sports results.

Where do people think Canada will finish in medal amounts and standings?

What would be a good final result?

Ehhhh....classless? I dunno. It was a little cheeky maybe, but I'd rather have people say what they think, rather than babbling bland nothings, like most commentators.

Figure skating is a strange beast, I can't think of another sport where the very elite athletes in the world can't actually perform the requirements of their own program (yeah, aerial, diving, gymnastics are similar), and it's almost an expectation that they will screw up at some point.

If people had any even remote idea of the difficulty required in this sport this wouldn't be much of a discussion. Countless intense hours and years of dedication and sacrifice. In a discipline that is incredibly difficult to master.

Figure skating as well being such an established discipline the bar is set pretty high for competition. There are so many figure skaters out there in the world that have never attained anything even through countless years of sacrifice. Conversely some of the other medals awarded in other disciplines in these games are easier to win. Theres medals at these games that get won with but a few years of specific training.

Conversely figure skaters, to be even remotely competitive, have to practically be born on their skates and with their whole lives being sacrificed.

You win a Silver medal in Men's figure skating and it should certainly be no criticism warranted.

According to my list, it comes right after curling and just before tennis, which means it's the number four sport in the world.

Not even joking. One and two are soccer and ice hockey.

Top 3 in the medal standings and 30 medals would probably meet COC expectations.

Personally, I expected about 13 medals at this point in time, and they're at 11 so they're a little behind right now.

While Canadians tend to moan about the Olympics, they have met expectations the last couple of Games. They were about 1 medal off my projections in both London and Vancouver but did so completely differently.

In Vancouver all the gold medal favorites and strong medal contenders performed as expected with an expected amount of surprises.

But in London the favorites and strong contenders faltered but there were a lot of athletes with outside chances who ended up outperforming expectations.

We'll have to see where Sochi ends up fitting on that spectrum.

Did the athletes have to walk uphill both ways in 3 feet of snow to get to and from the events too?

Good for Chan. Tough to lose out on gold, but he certainly did us proud.

So stoked to wake up early and watch Canada run show in short track, so thats pretty disappointing. Guess I'll have to make due with the big hockey game instead

Thank goodness for Morrison. Two somewhat surprising medals to offset the short track bed-pooping.

Pretty insane that a 1500m skate comes down to a photo finish time adjustment. Skate nearly a mile and the gap between Gold and Silver is in the millimeters, go figure.

I just watched the Charles Hamelin crash, unfortunate, hopefully he shows up for the 500 m

On a side note, I don't know his name but the guy calling the speed skating events is very awesome

no, people who do that are stupid, the team wins the cup, not the fans, one fan is not better than an other because a team he cheered won a tournament.

you just enjoy the game. Anything more is unhealthy IMO

Apparently we have very different definitions of "puffing out your chest". Mine is simply being proud that your team won, it seems your definition stretches into the realm of arrogantly belittling opposing fans, which I don't approve of.
