Buffalo - Colorado (McDavid vs MacKinnon)

To Buffalo:

- MacKinnon

To Colorado:

- 2015 1st
- NY Islanders 2014 or 2015 first.

Offseason trade where Buffalo and Colorado both decide to do some gambling. Sabres decide to go for the sure thing and lesser player in MacKinnon, deciding to roll with MacKinnon and Reinhart as their top 2 centers.

Colorado decides to go all in for McDavid.

Why would the Avalanche want to do this?

I thought this would make an interesting thread.

To use an analogy: would you rather have a 100% chance of getting a player like Tavares or Stamkos, or would you rather have a 50% of getting a player like Crosby?

Why would Colorado do this? MacKinnon is already proving to be a very special player at the NHL with the capability of begin a top 5-10 player. McDavid is all hype and may have a slightly higher ceiling. Even then, I don't think he'll be Crosby.

I'd rather keep MacKinnon then trade at a chance to have a slightly better player.

By odds you dont have that great chance to get #1 pick, even if you finish last. I keep Mac.

I think this is a fun idea, actually. I have I think some rational hopes that Buffalo's 2015 1st and NYIs 2015 first end up being the far better package.

The reason, though, that Colorado doesn't do this is that once Buffalo gets Reinhart and MacKinnon, the tank is over for them. They start team building as fast as possible, and that 2015 first might no longer end up being in the top 2.

really, you guys are already last in next year's standing and won both lottery... GREAT!

as for the offer, COL decline, they are happy with what they have atm, and with the prospects developing the way they should I don't see a reason why they would take this gamble

As a Sabres fan, to be honest I don't think either team would want to do this.

Some Avs fans are right though, we end up with Reinhart and MacKinnon, and we probly don't finish bottom 5 anymore.

Best case for Avs if we still suck, and the Islanders defer. Avs could end up with 2 cracks at Mackinnon, and if not they still receive two top 5 picks in 2015.

Worst case Islanders finish 7th this year and do NOT defer. Avs take a mediocre prospect compared to Mackinnon. Then Sabres jump start their rebuild and improve next year.

Not very enticing from Colorado's perspective IMO.

Insert: 'These picks could be #1 and #2 in 2015, the Avs would be making out like bandits!'

In realty: Picks are never a sure thing, let alone picks two drafts away where teams have yet to even solidify their relative placement in the draft, prospects have yet to play 1.5 years of their development out and are entirely untested in the NHL.

MacKinnon + all of Buffalo's prospects in 2014 could collectively push Buffalo into the 5-10 range if they had a strong year. That risk is not worth it.

Well, I don't personally buy the "McDavid is better than Crosby" hype, so I don't see a point in this. You could either have a player now that will be just as good as Tavares or a player in 2 years that will be just as good as Tavares.

Well, the avs won the draft lottery last year. Drafted mackinnon. Now it looks like their pick will be 18-24 range. Just because a team sucks one year doesn't mean they'll suck the next. Way too risky. No way in hell.

Yeah, unless Buffalo promises to play only AHL players and pull there goalie when there winning for the next two years Colorado would never do this. They give up a great player and take all the risk.

with mac, the sabres don't finish with the first overall

and the islanders will probably be a bubble team

so no chance, unless Buffalo hires sacco as head coach, then it gets consideration

Hire Sacco as head coach, sign play Hunwick and Zanon 25 minutes a night, and I might consider it.

I think you're underestimating the suckiness. As to the deal...

Would I trade 2 2015 1sts for MacKinnon? O ya, with a Sam the top 2 centers are collected, the defense is drafted and developing, just need to convert Hodgson, Ott, and Moulson into new wingers and life is gewd. Probably could re-sign Miller with MacKinnon on the roster. The Avs are probably better off in the long run (3-4 years down the road) but why? Its a gaurentee theyre better now and MacKinnon is a cup winning player later as well. Avs gamble for a minimal game at best.

The lasting memory of the Hodgson deal will be when we trade him for a winger like Kassian....

Islanders a bubble team is really a long shot. They are losing Vanek for sure, and possibly don't have the high first rounder this year.

They'll most likely be bottom 5 this year and next... just saying

Any GM who wants to keep his job would choose the former. Crosby isn't twice as good as Tavares or Stamkos, so the expected value of the picks isn't close to equal.

You just never know when a team will play over their head. The 09-10 avs are another example. The Sabres could wise up, fire Sacco, and start hot next year. A lot goes into finishing at the very bottom. It usually isn't just a bad roster. It takes injuries, slumps, and poor coaching to really bottom out. The consensus "worst team" picked in the preseason rarely actually finishes last.
