Hopefully a speedy recovery.

Get 100% healthy Kris, then you can think about hockey.

Seriously?

Shouldn't even be a concern right now!

I doubt anyone knows right now what the consequences are for his career. they caught it and he's being treated with the best of care. if I had to guess, I'd say he won't be back this season.

things like this really put everything into perspective, clear as a bell.

best wishes to Letang and family.

JF would they operate right away or can he go forward without it? You think he had the surgery already? Open heart surgery is a risk within itself.

If he's on blood thinners, he's not going under the knife.

Not on the phone with the GF. I said what she told me.

She did not think that blood thinners would be an option when she talked to me though. The surgery to repair the hole. It is interesting that her 6 week recovery time for that kind of surgery dovetails with the amount of time that the Pens say he could be out though.

Yep - this is one of those situations where life is greater than hockey. Get better, #58. What a weird situation.

Letang is her favorite player too.

And she was pretty positive about his complete recovery with one surgery. With the one caveat that there were no what she called 'residuals' meaning damage from the stroke. Around a six week recovery and good as new.

One of her friends who also was a nurse had exactly the same thing, they caught it, open heart surgery, was back on the unit in six weeks completely healed of the problem.
It surprises me that a very small hole cannot be repaired with endoscopic surgery instead of open-heart surgery. I guess we aren't as advanced as I thought.

there is no such thing as a "minor" stroke. Sid's concussion issues should have disabused anyone of the notion of mild mental health issues. If I'm Letang, I'm seriously rethinking my life's priorities right now....

No it isn't a joke. A hole if it is between the atria of the heart is an Atrial Septal Defect. It can cause stroke, enlargement of the heart and possibly even heart failure. To fix it they have to do open heart surgery and do a graf to close the hole, if its large enough. My fiance had the procedure done when she was young. unfortunately its hard to detect so many people aren't diagnosed until later in life. My thoughts are with Kris and his family. Lets hope he can get this resolved and can continue his career.

That is the case, though. Not to discredit your GF at all, as obviously these cases are all unique, and she knows better than 99.9% of the people on here.

Leafs fan coming in peace.

Even if only a minor stroke, this is still serious and I wish Letang well in his recovery. Hopefully he won't be in too much of a hurry to return to the ice as his life and health are far more important than hockey.

Horrible news for Letang. Sounds very similar to Tedy Bruschi.http://bleacherreport.com/articles/7...o-make-history

And a Caps / Habs fan wishing Letang a speedy and healthy recovery. Don't even want to speculate on his hockey career - health and family come first.

Take care, Kris!

What? Yes, there are. Strokes are graded on a scale from minor to major.

Edit:
Here is a chart that explains it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...h_Stroke_Scale

It's a stroke. Regardless of the severity, his well being should be his only concern at this point. Shut it down for the rest of the season, assess the situation, and make a decision on his future based on that.
