An alarming statistic has emerged. Max Pacioretty is tied for 14th in NHL goal scoring despite having missed a number of games with injuries but no Hab forward is in the top 30 in assists. This implies that the Habs are woefully short of forwards who could feed their ace scorer. The only one with the potential to fill this role is Galchenyuk. Sure. the Habs could use more snipers on RW and LW, but how about better centers? (I exempt Plekanec from this criticism because he has so many roles to fill.) Despite the reputed "harmony" between Max and Desharnais, DD really hasn't done an adequate job. Gallagher is more a mucker and scorer than a playmaker, so it's the center that should take a greater responsibility. (How many goals would Max score if he played on a line with Crosby!) Those fans who would consider trading Max are screwy. Put Ovechkin in his place and while Ovie would still score a lot of goals his totals would be less impressive.
I'd trade away DD without a second thought, but one must admit he's been playing more of a two way game recently, he steals the puck from the other team and play inspired hockey, i don't think DD is the problem right now, but in the long run i don't want him on the team.
I agree....2/3 of our 1st line is made up of guys that are not 1st line players.
At this point i'm willing to take a step back to eventually take 2 steps forward. Galchenyuk needs to be given more responsibilities when he returns from injury. If DD has played well enough the last few months to make him a trade option i say move him.
And while we're at it MB should not even consider re-signing Gionta. Trade Briere if there are any takers at all, and entertain offers for Markov.
Patches needs to make his teammates better. He has all the talent in the world but he's afraid to take the next step. If you could put Gallagher's heart and desire into Patches body, he'd be a top 5 player.
Pacioretty could make his teammates better if he had a little more help from them. Max is a goal scorer, not an assist machine, Only Subban is in the top 30 in assists. Doesn't that imply something about the other forwards?
One of the big problems I see with Max is he's idle on the ice. He doesn't get into open areas as much as he should and with his size and speed, he should be able to create better opportunities for his teammates to get him the puck.
I'm a Patches fan, but sometimes he's very frustrating to watch as he glides around the ice waiting for something to happen instead of having the drive to create it himself.
You could have said the same thing about Maurice Richard and Bobby Hull. Accept Max for what he is, not for what you want him to be. Besides, judging from his injury history, he couldn't be as passive as you imply.
