I imagine that scheduling is such a nightmare, that those kinds of thoughts don't even enter the conversation.

Selanne hasn't been on the ice for the second period. He must be hurt.

Oh I bet it does. You think it's coincidence that Canada, defending gold medalists and dominant hockey playing and watching nation got every single one of it's games at the latest possible time and thus at least manageable north american times (noon eastern, 9am pacific)? Not coincidence.

Population decline?

Other options...plus, IMO a big reason for it is that North American attitudes about development are starting to creep up into the Nordic and European hockey mentality. The Swiss have always kind of had that thinking: defense-first, tremendous discipline, winning coming first at all levels, high-level strategy very early, systems play, etc.

As that becomes part of the mentality, the creativity leaves the game. That creativity is what allowed relatively small European populations to produce a lot of hockey talent. And, IMO, it is the reason why Canada or America has not produced more generational talents.

As pointed out to me by @sirmakinen, Selanne may have injured his neck.

Via @PeteBlackburn (who you should follow for OLY), here's Teemu Selanne getting his neck worked on during 1st. http://twitpic.com/dvcuk3

Well...OK. But perhaps that is because hockey is like air to Canada. Advertising-wise, effort/benefit-wise...you know that by making that schedule work, you're making a LOT of people very happy.

Its hard to put in words...working hockey around Canada's schedule is a different beast than working it around Austria's or even the USA's.

Plus, everyone hates you guys!

Regarding the schedule, I'm disappointed that they have two games going on at the same time. What does a game take, 2.5 hours since there really aren't any media timeouts? Have three games per day, one at 1pm, one at 4:30pm and one at 8pm. There's no point in having four games in a day when you could spread them out like that.

I know that's why DVR exists, but DVRing a game sucks. I always want to look at the score.

Edit: I feel like Finland is declining, too. Sure, they have Granlund, Barkov and Maatta, but outside of them, I don't see many skaters for them, either. Their goaltending could keep them contenders for the next few Olympics, though.
There's enough depth in Finland that all they need is a few more high success stories over the next couple of years to be fully reloaded. They have more than enough good players on the right side of 30-32 to be able to keep it together.

and as for a hypothetical Czechoslovakia roster just based on what they've got on their current rosters (allowing for use of injured players who were named to the roster, and honestly I'm not going to take the time to sort out how correct I get LW/C/RW assignments):

Elias (Cze) - Krejci (Cze) - Gaborik (Svk)
Hossa (Svk) - Hemsky (Cze) - Jagr (Cze)
Hemsky (Cze) - Hanzal (Cze) - Voracek (Cze)
Michalek (Cze) - Plekanec (Cze) - Sobotka (Cze)
Tatar (Svk) - one of Cervenka, Novotny, or Frolik (all Cze)

Chara (Svk) - Michalek (Cze)
Sekera (Svk) - Visnovsky (Svk)
Zidlicky (Cze) - Smid (Cze)
Kaberle (Cze) or Gudas (Cze)

Halak (Svk)
Budaj (Svk)
Pavelec (Cze)

The final tally is 16 Czechs (11F/4D/1G) and 8 Slovaks (3F/3D/2G). It shows how thin the Slovaks are at forward. The Czech Republic has been fortunate to have guys like Hanzal and Krejci and Voracek all pan out into productive, very good pros. When you look back, it's also been the case that they've not really lost a lot of gamebreakers or anything. They will when Jagr is gone, and Elias too, but beyond that the only top, top tier guys they've lost are Hejduk and Havlat. There have been some very good players (Rucinsky, Dopita, Prospal, Vasicek, Lang, Straka) but it's not like they had a generation of invincible star players all fade away at the same time.

Of course this is just my kind-of sleep deprived crack at a unified roster. I'm sure someone will come along and do a better job. But still, I wouldn't want to play that team. You could probably make a case for them to sit anywhere from 3rd to 5th best among all the high end hockey nations.

I actually totally forgot that Halak and Budaj were Slovak. So they do have solid goaltending. It's strange that it's actually the Czechs that have the bigger trouble in net with Kovar, Salak, and the kinda disappointing Pavelec.

Hard to say. Slovakia doesn't seem to have the best developmental record overall, so it's probable that they just managed to hit on a handful of elite guys all at once and haven't been able to replicate that. It's also possible that the ongoing sort of mid-1st tier limbo that the Slovaks are prepetually stuck in dulls the enthusiasm for hockey and siphons kids away from getting into the sport. Or maybe their coaches and developmental system just suck.

Every country goes through lulls, but Slovakia's is just too long to be a regular cycling of talent. From 99-04 they had 10+ Slovaks selected in every single draft. In 2 of the last 5 drafts that I have collective data from (up to 2012) they had zero selections. Hell, in the 2010-12, there were more players picked from Germany than Slovakia.

There seem to be clearly underlying problems that they need to address.

Yeah, I guess the Czechoslovakia roster would be okay (Hudler, Vrbata and Hejda weren't chosen for the Czech Republic for some reason, too). Too bad Hertl is hurt.

The JVR-Pavs-Kessel line has me so giddy right now that I'd almost forgotten Dustin Brown was on the team and playing top six minutes. Let's go USA!!!

It is called fitting in something like 60 games in just over a weeks time. The olympics only have 2 weeks to fit in every single event. And an event like hockey where there are 12 teams that gets pretty hard.

Nope, Carlson from Kessel and JVR. Honestly thought he should have instead of JVR but I could be wrong.

Edit: Yeah looks like Pavs had changed and Kesler was already on for the goal.

Welp that game opened up quickly. And 7 goals scored and pavs doesn't even have 1 assist. Hockey is a weird game some times.
