Biggest Surprises So Far?

Quote:
With group play in Men’s Hockey wrapping up Sunday, the 2014 Olympics will be moving on to the knockout round starting Tuesday. Despite the early start times for those of us in North America, the games have not been short on excitement or intrigue. The USA vs. Russia game that began at 7AM ET on Saturday was the most watched hockey game in the history of NBC Sports Network. Viewership peaked at a remarkable 6.4 million viewers during overtime and the eventual shootout.

Group play has seen a number of surprises, both good and bad. Here are the five biggest ones as we head into the most exciting portion of the tournament:
http://thehockeywriters.com/five-big...rprises-sochi/

The Swiss's stifling defensive system? The collapse of the Czech Republic/Slovakia? Canada's disappearing act on offense? Zach Parise with no points?

Has to be every announcer's ability to completely overrate Maata's defense. They kept saying yesterday "What a great move around Maata and he's a good defender." Obviously not if he's getting turned around every time he makes a play on an offensive player

The collapse of Slovakia/Czech is the biggest disappointment to me, but we shouldve seen it coming.

Both countries have very few great up and coming youngsters either, so it may be this way for a long time.

Biggest surprise: Our defensemen from Liiga didn't look out of place against Canada.

The only real disappointment I've had is with the bad ice. YES, I know they're all playing on it but that isn't my point. Bad ice effects the quality of plays and effects the quality of the game. I think all the games have suffered because of the bad ice.

Surprises:
-James vanRiemsdyk...wow!
-Ryan McDonagh and Cam Fowler are really good and showing no nerves.
-Matt Duchene is standing out on a team full of all-stars.
-Andrei Markov looks great.
-Switzerland...Hiller's doing it again.

Disappointments:
-Patrick Kane is a world class forward but he isn't playing close to like it on the big ice.
-Pavel Datsyuk in the shootout vs. USA. That was it?(half joking but I thought he'd throw in something ridiculous)
-Alex Ovechkin is playing even more selfish, stupid, lazy hockey than usual. Very disappointing in his home country.
-Slovakia/Czech Republic

Aw, cut Datsyuk a break, he scored 2 in the game and is clearly not 100% healthy. He probably also didnt want to risk getting too fancy when so much was on the line (although that didn't stop Kovy from pulling that floater shot...)

Also about Pat Kane, i think he actually has looked good and gotten many good chances (some created by him, some by linemates). I dont think he is playing poorly honestly, I just think the puck has not been quite bouncing his way where the goals are concerned.

JVR does look very good, I miss him in Philly honestly (Flyers fan here).

I pretty much agree with most of your post though

I've been particularly impressed with the US defense. Despite how young they are, they have looked very calm under pressure and have performed very well in front of Quick.

Well Norway's defence didn't look too bad either.

So much for the Swiss being a new power, eh? They seem to play up to great opponents and get juiced up when they're the underdog, but underperform when they're actually the favorites.

One game. I still think Swiss hockey is going forward and looking better every year.

Absolutely shocked at what Slovenia has done. Really hope they can carry it over to the quarterfinals and give Sweden a run.

I've been pleasantly surprised at how poised and confident Slovenia and Latvia have looked so far.

Slovakia was a massive disappointment.

Slovenia.

Datsyuk showing a lot of passion with his age.

Carter being one of Canada's best forward.

How pedestrian Pietrangelo looks.

How invisible Crosby is.

Belov being pretty good since he plays in edmonton.

How small MSL looks on olympic ice lol.

-The Russia/Slovakia game.
-Switzerland with 3 goals in 4 games
-Slovenia and Latvia both advancing
-Closer competition between Strong teams and weak teams (no 14-0 blowouts)
-Finland holding its own despite their injuries.

These are the surprises for me so far.
