Ummmm, what? Is Thornton going to sign for 1.5mill as well. We can't afford the guy, even if we could afford to give up the youth! Which we are lacking quite badly at the moment.

This would make total sense though...you sign Steen. Sign Khavanov...you move that d-man. If this does come true this would be huge by JFJ. I think JFJ does more moves in order to make this work under the cap.

Depending on the picks, the trade might be worth it. Boynton's a solid #2 defenseman, he's a year younger than Kaberle, and if the deal was based on assuring long term contracts for both Thornton and Boynton, I think it would be worth it. However, with Sundin, Thornton and Allison it would create a bit of a grid-lock up the middle.

Actually now that I think about it, I can't really imagine too many scenarios in which I like this signing. I would have even preffered Yushkevich to Khavanov.

Although I definitely think this could be a precursor to a trade. Maybe involving Kaberle. I hope not, but we'll see.

Besides, I'd much rather deal McCabe. Older, and incomprehensibly inconsistent. McCabe is as like to get 20pts as he is 50.
After finishing 4th in Norris voting in the last NHL season he might have decent value as well.

McCabe adds physicality though, something the Leaf D is lacking... I'm not altogether sure we should deal any of our D-Man unless we get a very enticing offer.
an off season? I thought he had a pretty good year this year. He may have had an off year last year in the NHL, but did he not have a damn good year this year (by his standards)

I don't any stock into this rumour, but we could manage to afford Thornton if JFJ was creative.

Forget about signing Lindros or anyone else for that matter then trade Kaberle and Klee and you might be able to make it work.

I would never complain about JFJ again if he pulled that off, but it isn't going to happen.

Thornton? He's a bit pricey to put on the 4th line.

Sundin
Allison
Antropov
Thornton

Pretty nice line up down the middle though.

I won't judge his style of play based on what I read. He might change, that's always possible.

The money (1.25) is alot to hand out under our circumstances.. We'll see.

I'm sick of these Thornton rumors.. He ISN'T comming here!! Please don't let stupid rumors get to your head people. This is just a depth signing.

McCabe-Kaberle
Khavanov-Klee
***-***

*** = Anyone of Berg, Pilar, Belak (if we decide to play him as a D-Man some games), Colaiacovo

That's all it is. Trading away Kaberle and Steen..

I'm just confused as to why the Leafs website has not mentioned anything about this signing... possibly a trade tomorrow or a Lindros signing tomorrow that they are waiting to announce it with?

Uh 4th line? Hell, I might even put him ahead of Sundin on the depth chart.

However, it would be great fun to see Glen Murray's stats dry up without Big Joe.

Here let me rearrange that for you.

Sundin
Thornton
Allison
Antropov

But even still....makes you wonder if this did go through, would the Leafs hold on to Sundin? You have to love speculation...Lots of possiblities....wow this would spike the messages on this Leafs board huge!

Likewise. It is silly because O'Connell just got hosed in this deal otherwise.

It is like the Jakob's just returned from vacation and found out that Mike had signed all those stupid deals and like a parent who catches their young child stealing candy, makes him go back and give it all back.

Do you think?

Yes because no matter how much Torontonians would love to see Thornton in a Leafs sweater, they'd go ape if Sundin was ever traded.

Would you not take Joe at this point?...I mean Joe now in comparison to Mats now.

Joe = young
Mats = aging

I love Mats, but if they got Joe and gave up Mats....I would do it.

For serious.

If Sundin was ever traded/let go by the Leafs.. I honestly would lose all faith (and it isn't much) in the entire organizations management team.

Honestly, I know it sounds stupid.. But if the price was Sundin.. I wouldn't do it. You don't trade away a guy like that. He has been the face of the franchise for the past.. What, at least 8 years now?

Joe could come in and cause all sorts of problems. I'm not suggesting he would but it's always a possibility.

I love Joe. But I love Sundin more

I'd take Thorton over Sundin any day. He's younger, and will continue to improve. If they could only land Thorton if it meant moving Sundin, I'd do it in a second. He's the guy you would build your team around. I'd never believe this deal until it was done though, if Boston was really going to move him, I'd assume they'd rather trade him to a Western Conference team (Detroit?)

My guess is that there are no trades. I dont think JFJ liked Berg/Cola/Pilar in our top 4 and subsequently made this signing, as a potential partner for Klee.

McCabe-Kaberle/Klee-Khavanov/Berg,Pilar,Cola. There you have it, thats our D.

I'd take Joe of course, I'm just pointing out that half of Toronto would be looking to skewer JFJ through his crotch.

JFJ would also know alot about Khavanov from the years he spent in St. Louis, so there must be something about his guy he likes.

But in this NHL, it will be rare, if not unadviseable, to keep two franchise players on the same team (e.g. Sakic and Forsberg). The economics will not allow it.

So, it is a very tough thing to imagine, but if the deal is there for Thornton, you do it.

Sundin would fetch a lot too.
