Belak, Hedin and Konwall are also Leafs property.

You also said it wouldn't affect them, and despite your points above, I counter that whether for their benefit (or not), or the benefit of the hockey team (or not) that it still affects them.

Thats a horrible d line up why would we unload Klee at 1.9 and sign Hamrlik for arround 4. Plus we need defencive dman like Klee. Your top 4 pairings has no defencive defencemen and the only one with any sort of physical game is McCabe. I think we must keep Klee.

Hamrlik is just as/more effective defensively as Klee and twice the player overall.

Khavanov is a poor man's version of Kaberle. I really don't like this move we needed a stay at home physical dman. I would rather keep Berg over this guy. I don't see why we need another puck moving dman. Pilar is going to have a break out year I think and he plays way more phyical then this guy.

Debateable on the defencive aspect. I just don't see the need for Hamrlik and his 4 plus million dollar pay cheque. We need to free up money not tie it up. Klee is a good bargain for what you get out of him. I like Hamrlik I just don't see him being a good fit in my opinion. We have two very capable offencive dman in Kaberle and McCabe who are reasonably payed and still fairly young. Then we have the steady Klee and our whipping boy Berg. After that we have the up and coming Pilar and Carlo who have tons of up side. I don't see the need for Hamirlik or buddy they signed today. I really think this pick up means that some one is on the way out which I am not keen on at the moment unless JFJ is going to pick up Witt in a trade.

Where did I ever say it would not affect them? Obviously it affects them since they will have to compete for their spot. As it stands, those 3 will be competing for the last 2 spots. Knowing Quinn, Berg will probably play most of the time, with one of Pilar and Cola switching in and out according to who is playing well at the time. Also I am not sure if Pilar and Cola would pair up well. However there will be injuries, meaning they still start most games this year.

Belak is nothing more than an emergency road starter, and Hedin and Kronwall are injury call ups.

Marchment is still a possibility for an 8th defensement.

Ugh. I'd rather have Pilar in the lineup regularly, and if we had to get a depth defenseman I was hoping it would be someone who can at least clear the crease, if not play solid positional defense.

I will wait and see on this deal. Anyone know for how many years? I know little about Khavanov, and I usually find that fans are poor judges of defencemen unless that defenceman is an absolute star. So I'll wait and see.

But I don't think this necessarily portends any trades. I always assumed we would sign at least one NHL defenceman.

One year, which is somewhat comforting.

I find it strange that mapleleafs.com still hasn't said anything about this signing. I'm wondering if it wasn't supposed to be announced to the public until this afternoon or something like that?

Cheap contract for a NHL defender.

And he doesn't have as much wear and tear as most players his age.

A good signing.

The only thing is we're adding yet another soft, old, offensive defenceman when that's the opposite of what we need.

Lukowich is an unrestricted free agent. Doesn't matter how old he is- he wasn't given a qualifing offer.

The Lightning were hoping to get him signed for less as a UFA, but he seems intent on finding somewhere else to play.

True. And I also agree with the posters who said that they would have given Pilar a shot at a more expanded role than sign Khavanov. I'm liking this signing less and less all the time.
