Mike Kostka

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 13m
Mike Kostka (CHI) and Mike Mottau (FLA) on waivers.

um...okay. I wasn't expecting it - but don't mind. He was underwhelming to say the least.

I'd have thought we could have got a low pick for him, but I guess not.

Extra defenseman whose skill set fit this team. Don't understand this.

Agreed, I like(d) him more than Brookbank.

Gotta be further cap/roster implications.

Brookbank doesn't go away without a cap hit and he's got a ring from last year. Definitely the type of guy Q prefers.

Meh, no real strong feelings on this one. Mildly surprised, but that's it.

Not to get all "John Scott" in this thread but I think Q likes to have Brookbank against more physical opponents so our guys don't get pushed around.

Yes he was. At least now we have less of a chance of Brookbank at W. Just wondering what is up. Maybe something is coming......like another 4C.

Kind of a head scratcher although I can't see it making much of an impact because he hardly ever played and even when he did he wasn't very good. The preference of Kostka over Brookbank is one I don't share because while they are both #7 d-men at best, at least Brookbank provides some toughness.

As for the reason for waiving him? I believe the Hawks were playing with 22 on the roster, so it's not like they needed to clear a roster spot to acquire a player. So I guess it's to clear some Cap space but Kostka's cap hit was barely above the minimum, so it's not going to improve the available cap space very much. At best it will allow Stan to dumpster dive where he couldn't even do that before waiving Kostka.

Over/under on the guy's age that Stan scrounges from the bottom of the dumpster - I'm thinking 36.

You must have seen something I didn't. I think he was the worst of the 3 rotating defensemen by a good margin.

It could be so the team can recall Pirri from Rockford. Sending Kostka down gives the Hawks a little over 800k in cap space.

By a good margin? Not at all. Him and Brookbank are both 6-7 guys that bring different elements. Kostka is a puck moving guy that suits this teams system.

Brookbank brings a bit of grit and isn't a total liability. And apparently Q thinks he can play wing.

Gotta be a potential cap space move right? This plus a Regin demotion gives the Hawks 1.2 million in cap room for a classic Stan bargain pick up. Didn't love or hate Kostka, is what he is, a 7th dman on a good team, 6th on a bad one, just like Brookbank pretty much

Kostka hasn't looked that great recently but that's because Q rarely plays him. Earlier in the season, when he played stretches of games, Kostka showed that he was miles better than Brookbank. As others have said he's a better fit for this team because, well...he can't actually skate (he also has an underrated shot). Most of the players who haven't fit with this team had problems with their skating. Brookbank only made that list longer.

Kostka was a decent #6 and a solid 7th man to carry in case Rosy goes down. Not only did we get rid of the wrong player based on talent, we also kept the guy who our coach repeatedly misuses. Stan needed to save Q from himself and get rid of Brookbank. Massive fail from our GM here.

This is such ********. How does having Brookbank change that in the least? For one, most enforcers don't accomplish this as the guys that do the pushing aren't intimidated in the least. Second, WTF is scared of SHELDON BROOKBANK? He can hardly stand on two skates let alone intimidate somebody.

I understand you're postulating a Q rationalization, but even so it doesn't make it any less laughable.

Meh, he's not that great and wont be getting any time down the stretch this year. We'll go with the same 7D that won us a cup last year.

There's been no notable difference between Kostka and Brookbank this year IMO. Kostka had a couple good games, scored a nice goal against Toronto.. but then got hurt and hasn't been near that good since. He's a puck-moving Dman that, IMO, has struggled to move the puck quickly and efficiently at this level. He seems to be rushed a lot. I'm not saying he's been terrible, but I don't think Brookbank's been either.

And I really don't think this signals any kind of impending trade for Chicago.. unless they're planning on bringing in another Dman to play above Rozsival.

They're both decent extra defenseman, but there's definitely a noticeable difference between the two.

In playing style, sure. Meant to say I don't think there's been a noticeable drop off in play on the third pairing with Brookbank vs. Kostka. They've been equally effective (or ineffective, however you want to look at it) in different ways.
