Hartnell or Simmonds on the other hand, somewhat fit the bill. Although major stretch calling them first liners.

It won't be.

It's 1 for 1, with a possible conditional pick.

I wouldn't like that return if I was a Ranger fan, but I could definitely see him ending up there in free agency.

That'd be pretty ballsy of Shero though. Martin out for a month. Letang possibly done for the year. Scuderi would be the only one left of our intended top 4 to start the year.

Absent King, Callahan is the only Ranger I'd want in Pittsburgh. I doubt the Rags trade him to Pittsburgh.

2. Shero and Bylsma selected him to be on team USA even though he has struggled this year, and played him a lot at the Olympics. They obviously like him a lot.
3. With Orpik and Niskanen coming off the books next year, the Pens could afford his salary next year and beyond rather easily.
4. Callahan bring an element if leadership that the Pens have been lacking since Bill Guerin.
5. Callahan's style appears to complement Crosby well, and it solves Crosby's RW issue.
6. He fits Bylsma's "grind ****ers down" philosophy

However, it makes no sense for the Rangers to trade him to Pittsburgh. But damn, it makes a lot of sense for Pittsburgh.
I agree with points 1,2,4,5,6. With the cap going up and the uncertainty of Letang moving forward, I doubt Pittsburgh lets Niskanen walk. I'm guessing they resign him.

Blue Jackets fans would be pissed if they got him, give him the money, and if Atkinson was the cost. Think they have too many players like him and not enough players like Atkinson(scorer, especially if Gabby is traded/not extended). I have no issues with Callahan but not at the cost of Atkinson, then I would be pissed.
It seems like this would be redundant. Doesn't Nathan Horton fill a similar role? Would they really need a similar player that plays the right side no less? Idk it just seems sort if redundant to me.

I can't figure the Rangers out. They keep Richards and Girardi but trade the C?

What do you mean? Girardi is unsigned and Richards will probably be bought out. Someone is going to offer stupid money for Callahan in the summer, the Rangers would rather get value for him instead of nothing.

For what though? Unless Bennett or a D prospect is going the other way, why does NYR trade him to Pittsburgh? If NY is looking for a package, I'm sure they can get better offers than what Pittsburgh can (or would be willing to) give them.

I mean I wouldn't complain if he was here... but I just don't see it as a realistic option.

Hartnell is 21st in LW scoring and has consistantly been in the top 30.
Simmonds is 15th in RW scoring, was 21st last year and 35th the year before.

Both are 1st line guys. But I doubt it is either of them. I see it being Bennett and a 1st.

A young scoring forward who can come in and contribute immediately.

With Letang and now potentially Martin out... do you really see Shero trading a D like Orpik now? Would love it, but can't see it (just looking at the Pens side).

If an extension were in place, I'd offer Ennis for Callahan, is that close?

I don't know about other Pens fans, but I wouldn't mind this. I wouldn't really like it either though. It is true that Bennett is our only F with actual top-6 potential, but Callahan is already there. If we bring in Callahan, there's really no spot for Bennett anyway.

Depends on what the plus is. I'm starting to get tired of Bennett.
