Is Finland a Top 3 Hockey Nation

Poll question arising from the other thread (someone can merge if they want) to see everyone's opinions. Is Finland the #3 hockey nation on the planet, or do you still consider them #4 or lower?

Considering all the injuries they had, and they still got bronze I'd say so. Still think if rask would have played in the semis they would have been in the finals.

If the Czechs won the bronze, would that make them a top 3 hockey nation?

Yes, results quite clearly show that in the last 20 years. Canada is #1, Sweden is #2, Finland is #3.

The more interesting question is which one takes the 4th spot....USA or Russia?

I think USA takes the 4th spot with 2 silver medals and being a semi-finalist in the 2004 world cup.

Russia only has a silver and bronze from olympics since the best on best started.

Finland has 4 medals out of 5 olympics (1 silver, 3 bronze) and was a finalist in 2004 world cup. So really, the 3rd is not in question.

The question should be whether ranks from 2 to 5 are too muddled to clearly determine.

Because Finland, Sweden, Russia and USA are all in there somewhere. But where exactly, that's anybody's guess.

If Sam Gagner scored 8 points in a game, does that make him the greatest player since Mario and Wayne?

Tough to say. I think there is more than just the results of the Olympics that matter. The World Juniors are a reflection of the nations hockey youth and should be somewhat of a factor as well, I think. But so should the quality and quantity of pro players. Russia might not make the best international teams, but they have better star players than Finland for example. I think there are a lot of factors that go into it other than the Olympics.

Well, yeah, its all a guess or opinion. Canada wasnt even a clear cut favorite until these last 2 games when they raised their game to another level.

Hard to say. The Finns are always that pesky little team that lingers around. I guess they don't get the respect they should because they have never won a best on best tournament. But they're always in the mix. I would still say They are #4 or lower though.

Finland has been top 3 five times the last 10 years, what about USA? (OG)
I guess you don't even want to look at the World Championships. But I guess it's not as important as the Olympics.

Today? Top 3, gold in JWC and bronze in OG.

Does "top hockey nation" entail going .500 at the Olympics vs. other "big" teams? Is that the only criteria?

Canada, Sweden, Finland. Usa & Russia just don't have enough international achievements in past years to belong to top 3. Usa being 4th and Russia being 5th. Russia especially has failed miserably in tournaments...with all their superstars...there's no way they belong to top 4. individual talent top3 ranks look alot different tho.

Finland vs. USA in this time period:

Finland 0-1-3 and finalists in world cup
USA 0-2-0 and semifinalists in world cup

2002 Usa wins (group stage)
2004 Finland wins (semi-final)
2006 Finland wins (quarter final)
2010 USA wins (quarter final)
2014 Finland wins (Bronze medal game)

Anything else?

For the sake of the argument, lets do Russia as well.

Finland 0-1-3 and finalists in world cup
Russia 0-1-1

1998 Russia wins in group stage and semis
2002 Finland wins in group stage
2006 Finland wins (semi finals)
2014 Finland wins (quarter finals
