Possibility of Marian Gaborik trade

Since Marian Gaborik is a UFA-to-be, and the Blue Jackets have been successful - and remained in the playoff race - even with the injury to #10, I'm a little surprised that there's no discussion of Gaborik possibly being traded.

With Columbus presumably determined to make the playoffs this season, what kind of trade would make sense? Or, is Gaborik's re-signing inevitable?

Probably not a big trade market for an injured guy.

If they are close to the playoffs, why would they trade a guy who can score and is probably coming back soon? What am I missing?

With them being 1 point out of the playoffs, why would they trade him?

Gabby would fit in Van - if healthy

Yes, he would be raking it in this season, but he could potentially resign for less.

He would fit well with either Kesler or the Sedins.

All that being said, the Canucks are on the outside looking in right now and it will take quite the run for them to get in, so I'm not sure that fits with Gabby's plan.

If I'm not mistaken, he even owns a home in Vancouver already.

I'm just not sure what the Canucks could possibly give CBJ that works dollars/cap wise. I would imagine talks would start with Burrows and go from there.

Not quite 0, but pretty close to same. The possibility has been explored but it's looking unlikely - mostly because he's exactly the sort of player a deadline buyer wants to add, and we fancy ourselves deadline buyers. Therefore, there's not exactly much of a trade market - the only teams that'd be interested are those teams that wouldn't want to give up what we want! So, it's not impossible, but it's pretty close to that - not unless we lose every single game between now and the deadline, and even then it's not terribly likely.

That said, JK's done crazier things... like getting him in the first place.

TSN added him to their trade board "who's in play" today, which is interesting.

However, there is the possibility - unknown to anyone outside of Gaborik's circle and the Blue Jackets' management - that he has made it clear that he will not be re-signing in Columbus. If that's the case, goodbye Gaborik.

He did waive an NTC to come here and vague indications are that he likes the city, so the "not re-signing" bit would only be if contract demands can't happen.

I think they would be better off keeping him. They won't get the return they would hope for and his skillset helps them down the stretch more so than what any team would be willing to cough up for him will.

From the Burgh I'd do 2015 2nd + Dumoulin, or our 2015 1st for Gabby w/ salary retention. If not, meh. Can't imagine he will be re-signable for a contender, he's likely set on FA for his last payday.

Not with Torts here they don't get along that's why gaborik was traded. Torts was playing him on the fourth line.

If they start there, they'd end up going in a radically different direction, I can tell you that. We already have a 30+ year old former Canucks left-shooting right winger being paid ~$4.5m for the next four years for 20-goal seasons of years past, only ours is actually producing this year. Burrows is of zero interest whatsoever.

Would be stupid of them to trade Gaborik right now. This is a franchise that has made the playoffs once to my recollection and has never won a playoff game. It's important that they both make the playoffs and at least put up a fight in the playoffs. They don't really have much in the way of prolific scorers especially at forward. There's Gaborik and to a lesser extent Horton then...yeah.

It's not like the return would be great even if that could be used as a justification for a trade. He's on an expiring contract with injury issues this season and still an injury stigma even though he hasn't been much of an injury plagued guy in the last few seasons.

Just keep him and make a run. Load up and try to make the playoffs and get that first playoff win.

....then, Johansen and Atkinson, who have 41 goals between them. And the team is #6 in the East in goals scored. I agree with some of your points, but to act like this team has no scoring options is absurd.

You're a smart guy, you know neither of these things means all that much. Especially the latter - everyone says this about every single player they don't want to see leave.

That said I don't really see Gaborik getting moved...
