Why would NHL.com post odds?

Seeing how a lot of teams will still be adding UFA's it seems a little premature to be making odds. With that said I will go on record as saying Nashville is my sleeper pick for the cup. With the addition of Kariya and having Sullivan for a full season, great depth on D, and a capable goalie in Vokoun, I think they will surprise a lot of people. I think they will finish 4 or 5th in the west and have a great run in the playoffs.

Odds aren't base strictly on which team is better, but which team will get the most money played.

Yup, I just got back from Vegas and I talked to some of the people at various sports books and why none of had NHL Stanley Cup odds posted up on the big boards and the words "completely unpredictable" and "unanticipated developments" came up several times. I was going to drop 10 bucks down on the Preds knowing that even if they won the Cup, I'd likely never make the trip back out to claim my winnings. Still, it would have been fun. A few offered to take the bet, but gave me mediocre 10-1 odds. I passed.
