Nikolai Kulemin likely to be traded.

According to Darren Dreger, there have been some very good offers from NHL execs for Nikolai Kulemin. Dreger says he's a player that many teams like and would be willing to give up a nice package for. The Maple Leafs are in a situation where they may have to choose between keeping Dave Bolland as a 3rd line centre or keeping Nikolai Kulemin after this season. At this point, it looks like they might look to keep Bolland at around $5M and trade Nikolai.

Kulemin is a pending UFA and will likely demand around $4M.

A team that has been rumoured to like Kulemin for a few years is Pittsburgh.

Dreger says the offers have been so tempting that Nonis may have to suck it up and trade the winger.

From Toronto's perspective, what's a tentative asking price from the pens for Kulemin?

Dreger is the last guy I expected to hear this from

If "the offers have been so tempting that Nonis may have to suck it up and trade the winger" then I hope they do the deal, I'm kinda doubtful about that though for some reason.

Maatta?

good forward prospect probably. I love to get a 1st for him, or 2nd+sorta decent forward prospect.

Assuming he's set on testing free agency anyway, or pricing himself out of Toronto. If we could resign him to an acceptable contract that'd be option 1.

Not sure Pittsburgh really needs him right now. Jokinen has settled into the LW spot with Malkin and Neal. The Pens could use a 3rd liner but probably has to be a more affordable guy than Kulemin since they really need to use their best expendable assets to find Crosby a RW, especially with Dupuis officially out for the year with a torn ACL and Bennett likely out for another month with his broken wrist.

If they do trade Kulemin, I hope it's for someone that can help the team immediately. I'm not really interested in picks/prospects in return for him.

Kulemin plays both wings and has recently been a pleasant surprise at centre.

If only we had a 2014 second or an expendable forward prospect

Best I could come up with is Zlobin/Kuhnhackl and a 3rd. I don't see the Pens giving up a first unless its guaranteed he signs

Interesting. All I meant was Kulemin was likely a target for the LW spot with Malkin and Neal but Jokinen has been playing very well there. I'm not sure the Pens see Kulemin as a top line winger or a good fit with Crosby and I doubt they want to pay a likely high asking price just to play Kulemin on the 3rd line. I think the need for him went out the window when Jokinen started clicking with Malkin and Neal.

Pittsburgh is the second most likely destination for Kulemin if he hits the open market. Toronto being the most likely since his family is already kind of settled in and they love it here. The Penguins are a likely location due to the style they play and the ties to Malkin.

If the Penguins can make around $4M available in cap space, they'll have Kulemin for a long time.

Swap for Niskanen?

Something around Kulemin + Franson for Niskanen + Despres

Niskanen is the most rational asset the Maple Leafs should ask for in exchange for Kulemin.

The value is also there for it to be a good hockey trade.

Only problem is that the Penguins are messed up with injuries on the blue line.

They won't move Niskanen unless they can improve their defence.

How? Why would NHL GMs up their offers for Kulemin after a report from Dreger?

Because Dreger and Nonis are related? I scratch your back, you scratch mine aka you report Kulemin is getting lots of interest and getting good offers to try and get a good deal, I give you rumours to keep in business.

Is it a coincidence Dreger is the one who reports basically everything Leafs, but doesn't have a lick of a source on say, the Canucks, Flames or any other Canadian team?

Anyways, this is off-topic, so I'll leave it at that.

I think you misinterpreted his question.

He's not asking why would Nonis give Dreger this inside info, he's asking why would GM's read/see this media report from Dreger and think to himself "I should offer more for Kulemin"

That's great, but you're assuming NHL GMs use whatever TSN, Sportsnet, CBC, etc, guys have to say as barometers of the trade market.

He could have a lot of Maple Leaf connections. I am just wondering why you'd think GMs would take his reports seriously..

Oh yeah I'm sure there have been INCREDIBLE offers, all the buzz around the NHL is who will end up with Kulemin.

Well no **** there's lucrative packages for such a player as Nikolai Kulemin.
He's only the most coveted forward heading towards the tantalizing NHL Trade Deadline, next Wednesday starting at 9:00am EST only on TSN and TSN2.
