And that's the fear I have.. Galchenyuk would be playing 3rd line center with crap wingers and people will then be complaining that he isn't scoring enough. He would essentially be in the same position Eller is in right now.

The Habs get three out of four from Detroit and Pittsburgh without Price and move into the top three in the conference. People have been complaining about a lack of offence - the offence get's going with five goals .

People complain that Chucky gets buried on bottom lines - Therrien puts Galchenyuk with Plekanec and Gionta last game and Chucky has looked good, better than he did before the injury. Pleks has been hanging back and letting Chucky try to create things solo...I think they will make a good pairing as things go along. when Chucky turns it over Pleks is in position to defend. It should afford Chuck more offensive opportunities..yet people are still upset.

Therrien puts Briere with Galchenyuk and Plekanec on the power play as Briere gets rewarded for his offence - he gets the tying goal. Yet the first posts on the post game thread are "Therrien's a moron", "Fire Therrien", etc., etc. because a 20-year-old isn't the club's centerpiece forward every game.

I think the club has been sly with Brier's ice time - they want him fresh for the playoffs, that's when he's really a proven performer. I hope others have noticed that even this season Briere has shown an ability to score clutch goals...I have a feeling he will be clutch in the playoffs once again this season. Let's at least wait and see.

So what if a kid who just turned 20 doesn't play 20 minutes a game? Few do. Can't believe I'm reading comments that Therrien is "ruining him" by not sending him out there as a center head to head against Malkin and/or Crosby. There's been a certain amount of insulating with Galchenyuk, and there's nothing wrong with that.

He's still learning certain aspects of the game...let's not forget that this kid has played less than one full NHL season and less than two OHL seasons, and only one of those years was at center in junior as a 16-year-old...there is still some developing to do both mentally and physically before he's ready to go up against the best centers in the league...perhaps he's never a center. I'm not there at practice every day - but I would suspect he's still not great on faceoffs either.

Still, the key to coaching is playing players that plays well THIS game. How did Brière get less than 10 minutes. How does that motivates him to do anything in the playoff?

As always, you do know more about the game than I do, so I don't want to sound rude/ignorant but Therrien does seems to not reward players for good plays except his favourite and he seems to focus on the errors of some players (Subban/Chuckie).

Wow, way to break the groupthink - good on you! I'm still not a big fan of most of what MT does (I feel like he lacks coaching IQ with panic-scrambling lines, cracking down hard on players in front of the 24ch cameras, etc.), but I'll actually keep this in mind before complaining about how Chucky's being starved of minutes.

I think the issue for fans like myself is that it's really easy to say "give the kids more ice time - they're our future!" -- which is absolutely true -- without thinking about how they'll best learn.

Very smart and thought-provoking post.

Karlsson, Doughty, Pietrangelo, etc... I've seen all of them make some errors just like what we saw tonight.

The guy is struggling. Relax.

Funny you bring up Markov who has been pretty crappy this year.

Slowly but surely, our best players are being ruined by the coach. It must be stopped.

Please, for the love of God. Fire this idiot.

Eller will be fine, that is unless your expectations of him are to be a consistent top line player.

He can still be a valuable asset because he is one of the few players on this club that can actually play a puck possession game along the boards, and he has a decent skill set to go with it. What he doesn't have is the consistency to put it all together most nights, but that still does not make him a poor player. He should be an important peice going forward.

I liked that he was taking the puck to the net tonight. It makes me think that he's in a better place mentally right now.

He got less than ten minutes because he was centering the fourth line (and playing on the PP). It ended up being a mismatch with Briere facing the other team's fourth line, and resulted in a couple of goals for Briere's line even strength in addition to his game tying goal on the PP.

I thought it was a smart move to have him on the fourth line - ended up being a mismatch in Montreal's favour and helped get the win.

You can't win with the fanbase. Put Chucky in Briere's old spot..."why isn't Briere getting more ice time?"

Seriously - Therrien can't win.

I am no MT apologist, but fans on here take it too far. What happened with cheering for a team from coach to player to GM? If the coach or GM succeeds..the team succeeds.

I remember when I was 13..I used to really dislike Scotty Bowman because he would bench my favourite player - Pierre Larouche.

Never mind that the Habs were winning Cups...I'd be upset that my favourite player wasn't developing to his potential. When Scotty left Larouche once again became a 50-goal scorer..but the Habs never won with him as a top-line center. He never did become good defensively.

As I matured and the cups came less frequently, I came to realize how silly it was to dislike Bowman for icing the team he thought was best suited to win each night. He'd play Jarvis and Roberts 20 minutes some games while Lafleur, Cournoyer and Shutt sat on the bench..he dressed Jarvis, Risebrough and Mondou over Larouche....Risebrough's line often played more than Cournoyer's line....but they won.

Briere has issues defensively...I don't want him playing 18 minutes per game at center..that's for sure. I would not have liked to see him head-to-head versus Crosby tonight. He was used as an offensive specialist towards the end of his Philly days...and I don't think Therrien is wrong using him on the wing... and only at center when he's insulated defensively against bottom lines,

Good teams invariably have centers who take care of their own end. Makes for a more boring game..but that's the way you win.

I have no issues with the benching of Subban. My biggest issue is that therrien did not say anything positive to Subban at all. The job of the head coach is to give positive reinforcement to players. You never see coaches like Mclean, Suter, Julien, Hitchcock etc.... just stand there and say nothing. Those coaches go up to their players and they say take a breather and next shift go out there and make up for it.

? galchenyuk has been back for 2 games.

fire therrien has more to do with his love for bouillon and murray on our bottom 6. or choosing bouillon over subban with under a minute to go...

subban is not playing well, but it's the coaches job to turn help him around. he needs to do something, because it's been a month or so of so-so hockey. obviously what he's doing didn't work...and he did it again. maybe put some trust in him...regardless, like he does with dd.

briere played under 10 minutes, and produced...saving for the playoffs? must be what he's doing with eller too? briere could very well be special in the playoffs, but what therrien is doing now will not reflect that...

eller
prust
subban
emelin

are all playing worse this year...most the same, but nobody is getting a lot better. outside price, of course, who has been special all year.

seems like a lot of despite the coach...type season. there's a lot of talent on this team...

You can do that. It's called being a blind fan. No matter what, just be a fan of everything and everybody part of the habs. You can do that if you want.

Others can criticize a coach or GM when they see odd decisions being made. It's also perfectly normal. You can disagree with other fans about what was a good or bad decision.

Overall, I'm just not pleased with the on ice product and that's not because I'm not a fan of the guys wearing the jersey. Really not a fan of the way Therrien's current system and the roles he's attributed to each line and player. I also disagree with pretty much every decision Bergevin has taken this year.
Now, come PO time, that's all out of the window and everybody will be in the same boat because winning, no matter how you do it, is all that matters. If we end up losing (most likely), people will criticize.

Subban never struck me as the kind of guy who gets phased by these things.

He screwed up big, he knows it. He was benched, yet he was the happiest guy on the team after the game ended. He's fine.

A win is a win....always good.

BUT

Galchenyuk...back at under 12 minutes, no overtime
Briere....back at under 10 minutes, no overtime

I can't take it anymore of Therrien's robotic coaching.
Play well or play like ****, players don't get more or less ice-time or "candies".

While we see young stud center around the league like McKinnon playing 14-15 minutes on a team that got tremendous talent down the middle.....here in MTL, Therrien played our stud center 10-12 minutes on the wing, against toughest opposition.....

Subban......now it's getting ugly, stupid move again and again....against a Star-Player
Briere.....makes Therrien looks even dumber, MT hate Briere....MT don't care about the team really, his feelings are more important.

Good win...but i hate Therrien for playing with the confidence of many great young player.

He just seems happy all the time, which is awesome. The fact is people need positive reinforcement now and then, and it's therrien's job to do so.

The fact that this team has 73 points is miraculous.

They can't erase his smile no matter how hard they try. If Therrien benched everyone who played like crap...I'd have no issue but he plays favorites and I absolutely hate that.

I remember when I was 13..I used to really dislike Scotty Bowman because he would bench my favourite player - Pierre Larouche.

Never mind that the Habs were winning Cups...I'd be upset that my favourite player wasn't developing to his potential. When Scotty left Larouche once again became a 50-goal scorer..but the Habs never won with him.

He was used as an offensive specialist towards the end of his Philly days...and I don't think Therrien is wrong using him on the wing on higher lines, and at center when he's insulated defensively against bottom lines,

Good teams invariably have centers who take care of their own end. Makes for a more boring game..but that's the way you win.
As of now, our team got completely outcoached in the playoff with Therrien. I hope he can prove me wrong this year, but I have a hard time imagining this team not being better with a coach like Boucher. As always, I do hope I'm just a unknowledgeable fan, but I don't see Therrien as a coach that use his assets at their full potential. Namely Subban, Eller and Bournival. Once again, I'm no coach, so I hope he proves I'm a complete ****tard.

I dunno, anyone who made that play on the Sutter goal would have felt some repercussions, even if a long time veteran did that.

I'm not the biggest mt fan, far from it, but it was abundantly clear that subban was not going to see much ice after that play.

We are lucky that subban is wired the way he is. Theres just not that many players out there with that type of mental makeup. If there was ever a star Taylor made for this market, its pk.
