A second player's suspected of testing positive for something.

That's too bad.

Dr. Xokkeu used his extensive medical knowledge to google and find that the drug is an apparently unsafe dietary supplement.

Not quite sure how it's performance enhancing but two other Olympians apparently tested positive and since it's banned in most countries it doesn't seem to be a case similar to Backstrom.

Dr Xokkeu got his medical degree along with Dr Pepper years ago.

Finnish anti-doping boss said IIHF rules had dangerous loophole that basically enabled two players to dope without risk of disqualification. I'm not sure if there's different rules for Olympics.

This will hurt future growth and the image of hockey in Latvia if they are disqualified. Hopefully the whole team doesn't get disqualified for the mistakes of few.

The point is moot, as the tests happened after they played Canada, not Switzerland

Hopefully not. But these two should never play in the national team again.

I don't think they test every player after every game do they? They could have had the same stuff in their system against the Swiss and all tournament and just not been tested until the Canada game.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylhexanamine
Originally created as a medication for nasal congestation(stuffed nose with allergies etc), which was taken off the market in the 80s. After ephedrine was banned it gained popularity in dietary supplements as an alternative.

It has a positive effect on breathing ability, and has been marketed as an energy booster though the article doesn't verify this. Also causes contraction of blood vessels, and thus can have a bad effect on the heart. It has been found unsafe and linked to a number of deaths, and is banned in multiple countries including the US.

PS. This is all from the wiki page. I don't know if it's reliable information, though the citations seem to be in order.

Testing the whole team when one player is caught

I guess there are still delays with the results of the doping tests: the last game team Latvia played was Feb 19th and only now the news of a second player arrives. Is the substance confirmed to be the same with the 2nd player?

So with these team Latvia incidents, for the first time in the Olympic games an ice-hockey team could be disqualified. Team Sweden at least was (maybe still is, if the test results really are delayed) in a risk also, since 4-5 other players were at some point using the same substance/medicine Backstrom was. However " those who were tested (after the final) have certainly not taken the medicines" said team Sweden doctor Waldebäck in interview on Feb 24th. Source: http://www.microsofttranslator.com/b...cle18432390.ab

Pavlovs and Freibergs (if it is him) were caught by random tests, I assume. The whole team should be tested if one player has violated the anti-doping rules IMO. With team Latvia I guess this was not possible, since they had already exited the tournament when first result arrived. But with team Sweden, why not test all players after the gold medal game? And if the had been no other violations, it would have cleared a lot of the suspicion that now remains

I hope the goalie isn't implicated, although as a Canadian it would make me feel better about not being able to solve him

That Latvian chap can take Nicklas Bäckström in the hand.

And jump out of our sight - down the Niagara-falls if they want to!

Coz cheaters always keep on cheatin' - and livin' a lie!

Bye, bye ...
