He was also a 30+ goal scorer on two separate occasions. Callahan has NEVER done either.

But again, it's not a numbers-to-numbers comparison. It's about the principle of it. Chris Drury got a contract he didn't deserve because of "intangibles". The money he got was way more than he deserved compared to similar point scorers in the league. He got it because of intangibles. It ended up being a massive waste of money. There were also major concerns about his health given the way he played the game. He had injury concerns. Yet he got more years than most other teams would have been willing to give. He got more money than he deserved and he got more years than he deserved. Why? Supposed intangibles. It blew up in our faces.
No, "intangibles" are not why Chris Drury was overpaid. Intangibles are the word posters around here use when goals and assists are about as deep of an analysis as they can conduct about a player. Chris Drury was overpaid because Glen Sather made the same mistake you're making right now: thinking that Chris Drury was a major point producer on his own, not the garbage man on a high-octane power play.

You know where Chris Drury spent the bulk of his even strength time while playing for the Buffalo Sabres? On the 2nd or 3rd line. You know who was on that Sabres power play surrounding Drury, who was planted in front of the net? An in-his-prime Daniel Briere, Thomas Vanek, Derek Roy in his prime, Jason Pominville, and even though he's a moron, a properly-utilized blast from the point from Ales Kotalik.

If Ryan Callahan EVER had the opportunity to be the garbage man on a PP with that kind of talent, he would be putting up 60 points, too.

Quote:
He's already missing double digit games per season. How many will he be missing 4+ years from now?
No, he isn't. He's missed double digit games twice, once this season, and once 4 years ago.

Quote:
Not to mention, his playoff performances in the past have been marred by nagging injuries he puts his body thru every year. This actually makes his situation *worse* than the Drury one. At least Drury had a few solid playoff performances to push his "intangible" narrative. Lastly, I think his type of game is getting less and less important in today's NHL. The Blackhawks have already proven that hits are perhaps the most overrated stats in the league.
Luckily, hits are a very small part of Callahan's value. And "intangibles" are only a narrative around here thanks to posters like yourself who continue to push it in lieu of discussing what Callahan actually does (or what Drury did, for that matter, when similar discussions were being held regarding him), which is play excellent defensive hockey, most of which has very little to do with hitting or even blocking shots. Those are two things he does very well, but neither represents the best of his defensive repertoire.

Yeah, that's a better word, I agree with that.

Uh so how are we getting all of this? Don't want Erat at all would Rather Pouliot. Taking out Moore for Tallinder makes us better defensively, im not sure the Rangers would want to do it though

Just looked at Erat's statline. 1-22 for a forward almost looks impossible.

Why would we ever want to put Erat in over Pouliot? Pouliot has been a big part of what has been our most consistent line all year, and makes. 3 mil less. I want nothing to do with Martin Erat.

I could probably give a better explanation on how I felt if I knew what the deals were that led to this. Vatanen from Ana? Tallinder from Buf? Erat from Wash? St. Louis from Tampa? How did this all happen?

I'm kind of rethinking making a play for Kesler.. can we get him without Stepan? and hell I might even do that right now.. He's annoying me, 1. with the hold out, 2. with his play. 3. Is he really fit for AV's style of play?

I don't care if it's the unpopular opinion. Count me as someone who would be ecstatic to sign Cally for 6x6.

That would be the scary part

Cally, Stralman, Dorsett, prospects and picks would be moved
Not advocating this at all, but think it is some BS the ever foggy Cigar Man might be doing the next 5

Callahan shows up for one game a month. Please move him, he is not worth even close to what he is looking for...

I'm scared that he doesn't get the MSL deal done and caves on Cally's contract demands.

Callahan at 6m/y would earn more money than Marian Hossa. Think about that for a moment

Agreed. Somewhat. I'd prefer 5.5x6 or 6x4.

Salaries are rising.

Clarkson's bone headed contract aside. If anyone has been paying attention to Baseball, Football, and Basketball the past 20+ years, with growing tv and ticket prices comes greater salaries. Not many guys care about the teams cap and fitting in more players of higher skill, they thing they can carry the team and let mgmt figure out how to fill the roster with cheap skill.

It's a shame, Owners raise tickets due to player salaries, player salaries escalate because of higher revenue. The fans loose out in the end. It's a vicious cycle that has been well played out in the other sports, now it is hockey's turn. (part of the reason I;m glad I have a local D1 NCAA team and have not been o a NYR game in a few years, can;t beat $12 tickets and $3 hotdogs.)

But I digress. Most people here can't wrap their heads around that. They feel xxx player is only worth the contract that comparable yyy player signed 2 years ago as a UFA or RFA.

If Cally signs 6x6 it's a safe bet by year 3 most salaries will catch up. His performace at the time is in question, but he's played ball the last couple RFA contracts he signed, he does deserve to get paid close to his UFA value to reward that and get fair value the next couple years. Years 3-6? Well, we'll see how that plays out. (so many variables to determine a value of those years today).
