Good job, again, Mike! I think you'll really be surprised with this years defensemen...in a good way. Guys like Lukowich and Sopel will both see increased minutes from their previous teams and neither have shown that they can't take the next step in their development. I think I'd rather see a real stay-at-home, hard-nosed defenseman on the Island as opposed to signing a much more expensive, and a much softer Hamrlik.

I think the best surprises of this season will come from the defensive end.

I really like this signing! Can't argue with Lukowich's quiet success in the NHL. Good stuff!

1. How is Hammer a bad fit fot the team? He hasnt had a bad season since joining the team. I'm happy with the Lukowich signing but you cant tell me you feel he is a better player than Hammer.

2. Papineau doesnt deserve a one way contract.

3. I said I found it hard to believe they were going for Mogilny but that is what I read. Also they dont need enough cash to sign him if they have a trade in the works to dump salary elsewhere. I was just curious if anyone else saw something like this.

Good signing. The guy plays a solid game, stepped up in the playoffs. Not super-smooth like Kenny, but reliable, blocks shots, holds his own in front of the net. Our #4 guy on D right now, IMO.

Hammer's days are over as an Islander, right? I can't say I'm too sorry. He seemed to be inconsistent to me last season, not as physical as years past -- maybe injuries made him shy away from contact? I thought he had a tendency to release off his man too early too often. And he didn't seem to step it up in the playoffs. He's a decent, talented DMan, but as a #4/5 now. And with the Isles current makeup I'd rather have Lukowich in that spot -- better fit, hopefully better chemistry.

It's just too bad that they killed Kenny. :-)

Mad Mike strikes again with another solid but unspectacular player. Nobody's going to pretend that Lukowich is a better player than Hamrlik, but then again nobody should think that he is a worse signing. Hammer is too expensive for this team while Lukowich comes cheap and pretty physical. He's not afraid to do the dirty work, something that this team needs.

Is it weird that I think this move will have a bigger positive impact than any of the others?

LUKOWICH, OWNER OF 2 CUP RINGS, SIGNS WITH THE ISLANDERS
Defenseman finished T-7th in NHL with +29 in 2003-04

"In so many ways, Brad was what we were looking for to fill out our
defense," said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. "He's reliable
and plays with a lot of passion. He's got tons of character. He also
has two Stanley Cup rings and really wanted to be an Islander.
There's nothing not to like."

"It's still sinking in," said Lukowich. "I feel like I'm a pretty
lucky guy. The Islanders are the team I've always wanted to play for
since I saw Smitty (Billy Smith) and the rest of the legends beat the
Flames in Calgary when I was a kid. I was proud to be drafted by them
and -- although it took a while -- even prouder that I'm finally here.

"I've had the chance to be part of two great teams in Dallas and last
year in Tampa Bay and those are experiences I can take with me to
Long Island. I look at the Islanders the way I saw our team in Tampa
Bay -- as a team on the verge of something great. I feel I'm a good
fit for Coach Stirling because the guys like Zhitnik, Sopel and
(Janne) Niinimaa can really move the puck. Especially from the
European vets who know the style of play, I know I'll learn a few
things from them about how to play without the red line."

"I always thought the Islanders thing was fate," said Brad, "because the best man at my parents' wedding was Lorne Henning."

LUKOWICH ENJOYS THE STAGE - ON AND OFF THE ICE

The personable defenceman, who recently signed on with the New York
Islanders, is the very definition of fan-friendly, a player who puts
it all on the line every time he takes to the ice.

Lukowich certainly hasn't regretted his choice of career paths,
having won two Stanley Cups- one with Dallas in 1999, the other with
Tampa Bay in 2004. His new Islanders club is hoping the luck follows
him to New York.

...and Lukowich wants to be here. Who knows where Hamrlik wanted to be on some nights!

Solid signing and good value for the salary.

Isles just improved their skill level on D. One fan breathing a bit easier. Don't want to exaggerate; this is not Chris Pronger, but he is a solid player with a winning pedigree. Didn't even know he was on the market; was his name mentioned much here (or anywhere) previously?

I love how he says its fate. Man, I am instantly a huge fan of Lukowich. I knew he was a good player who did his job now but he's now one of my fan favorites. Really gets me psyched out.

Since you asked....

I did, on mania, about a week ago on a thread about the draft... But, tell you the truth, I thought I deal with the Flames was more likely...

cheers,

The one thing Luk will bring to your team that not many if any of your players have is an unbelievable character on and off the ice. He comes to play every night, has a great leadership quality and doesn't bother with the "cliques" the isles players have a rep of partaking in. He's great in the community as well, give him a year there and he will be winning the NY good guy award awarded by the media...assuming the ny media is still doing that, I left NY about 4 years ago. Luk will play through just about anything, he's tough as nails. Good addition.
