No, that would be "Goons" not tough guys.

Stoner would fit term tough guy, he's having a decent season as a bottom pairing defenseman. He's an actual hockey player.

Good signing. Hopefully he can come into Iowa and make his mark with his physicality and maybe help with a little offense as well.

is it possible this guy gets a couple games at the end of the season if we're neither jockeying for seeding nor fighting for a playoff spot?

In the NHL? Nah.

Going from the WHL to AHL will be a tough adjustment for him alone.

just know they've played some fresh out of juniors guys before (bulmer). might be worth a look if we have someone that needs maintenance.

Don't think they have done that this late in the season when we are battling for the playoffs. I could see them using McMillan or Peters before a kid who just finished juniors.

Good point.

My guess is still no, though.

The reason that he was signed now is because today is the first day that players can be signed to contracts and not have them count for this year.

They might play him for a game to give him a taste and preview of what he needs to work on in the off-season, being around NHLers for a few days.

that's what i'm saying...only likely if our position wouldn't change one way or the other in seeding.

Spoken like a guy that has never played against somebody who is looking to put them through the glass. Guys like Neil, S. Thornton, Ott and Clutterbuck have value in the NHL despite their Corsi numbers.

Very Nice signing of a kid that has enjoyed production and success in Juniors. Signing a kid like this is a zero risk move adding to a position of need for next year in Iowa. Many centers in Iowa have be moved out there(Haula, Larsson, Rau, etc) so have to replace and backfill. Also this kid can be slow walked at AHL level which hasnt been the case of recent top end talent prospects for the Wild(Granlund, Coyle, Brodin, Zucker, and Haula) make brief pit stops in the AHL before graduating. The core group of prospects in Iowa are becoming minor league free agents and probably will move on soon(MacMillian, Foucalt, Cuma, Kampfer, etc).

Also if any major moves is made at deadline it could see one or a couple of the young players plus 2014 1st rd pick involved which creates a trickle down in organizations prospect depth and natural development evolution which was a brutal lesson taught to Wild fans by Risebrough who dumped picks for vets.

I have lurked a bunch at HF really gravitate towards prospect aspect of hockey operations. Being a MNWild content generator myself I really like seeing educated opinions and think the HF forums have some very smart Wild fans!

You never know when one of these "free" players actually ends up being an asset: Backstrom, Spurgeon, and Fontaine come to mind.

Casey Wellman too, to a lesser degree. He turned into a 7th round pick when we traded him to the Rangers.
