i bet Sather will sign Callahan to a stupid contract..

Glen Sather's thinking, ive got someone to take Gomez when i wanted to get rid of that contract, im sure i can do the same for Callahan since he is a fan favorite

Wait, wouldn't "at least $500,000-per-year apart on opposite sides of the $6 million annual mark" be something like: 5.75 vs. 6.25?

Ryan Callahan and the Rangers have met in the middle on a six-year term for the captain's potential contract extension, sources confirmed to the Daily News early Monday afternoon, but they remain divided on salary, believed to be at least $500,000-per-year apart on opposite sides of the $6 million annual mark

Maybe I am reading this wrong but it sounds like the Rangers are offering less the 6 million.

That is normally what being on opposite sides of the 6 million mark means. Probably 5.75 from nyr and 6.25 from Cally

We're getting closer to non-vomiting territory.

However, still don't want him at a dime over 5.

Signing and overpaying Callahan is the weak move. That is why I originally, months ago, thought it was a lock to happen.

I had almost convinced myself it wouldn't happen.

It should be at MOST. AT MOST. AT MOST!!! 4 years, for 4.7. That's the highest I would go.

Term and $$ is bad enough, but I could live with it if it didn't include a ntc. It will come with a full nmc.

Right? And it's all downhill for Callahan after this. He's regressing and now, he's reportedly going to have a modified NMC.

But I guess Sather's thinking is that some Bob Gainey will emerge and the more Callahan sucks, the more Sather can haul in in a trade.

4Y X 5M is the max I would go on Callahan. I could stomach 20M over 4Y especially as the cap goes up ... but what he wants ... NO.

By the way, I'd rather pay Dubinsky 6M than Cally 6M.

Not that I'd want to pay either that much.

Anyone think we can afford Ott and Downie with the Richards bail out money? I'm talking in the off season of course. Both would be solid 3rd line additions, pair them with Miller. Then keep Carcillo put him with Dorsett and Boyle/Moore/Lindberg. That's a bottom 6 that brings intensity, along with a potential to score goals. I'd rather use the Richards bail out money on Ott and Downie than over pay Stastny

then what do we do about the top 6 where the scoring is supposed to come from and the non existant 2nd line?

Not sure if more 3rd line talent is what this team needs. We certainly have an abundance of that.

A contract signed in 2014 is always bound to be worse than anything signed in 2013 and so forth.

I think the worst current contract is the idiotic bridge contracts Slats signed recently that will bring us to these situations with so many players in the near future.

Slats just keeps screwing up, first he signs Torts and then he completely fails to understand how the cap would develop. Unbelievable. Anyone with half a brain knew the cap would develop like this, I've made many posts on it over the years. Instead o'clock ing these guys up on longterm deals at around 4m, we will end up paying them 6-7m.

Let's say for fun Callahan ends up signing a 6 x 6 contract.

What does he need to do in your eyes to justify that contract? And don't say "win the Stanley Cup", because that's a team effort.

Would averaging a pace of 20-25-45 per year, averaging around 70 games, and continuing to be a solid option on the PK be enough? I think it's possible that he could do all those things - but it would be on the higher side of expectations, for sure. Especially given the way he's looked this year.

IMO he would need to put up at least 50 points and revert to the old Callahan.. someone who would hit anything that moved, and stuck up for his teammates on the ice, PK, etc.

Nope. For 6x6, the first few years had better look closer to 25g 55pt per year. More importantly though, he has to hustle like the player whose cashing in on his reputation right now and not like this diminished version of himself we've seen this year. If he's going to be a 45 point player at the start of the deal I shudder to think about when he's a 6M 35 point player two years into it.

Unless he dramatically turns to David Backes overnight, he'll never be worth that contract.

**** the contract, I don't want him on the team because he sucks at the game of hockey. The kid has heart, skill he does not.

TRADE HIM.
