What Do You Want To Happen?

What do you want to see happen on trade deadline day or prior to it?

Personally(If we are buyers):

In: Ehrhoff(top 4 D), Moulson(top 6 F) and another speedy top 6er type.

Out: Michalek, Phillips, Greening

Sounds good until you realize those three Senators won't get you any of those assets.

I would love to get a top-4 D AND a top-6 F but in all likeliness we're getting an enigmatic Stewart in exchange for a couple of good prospects. Getting Moulson and Ehrhoff would require too much and we aren't buyers.

I want to somehow end up with this for the rest of the year:

Mac - Turris - Ryan
? - Spezza - Ziba <- some kind of improvement over Michalek
Greening - Smith - Condra
Hoff - Da Costa - Stone
Neil <- keep fresh for playoffs! Buckle up!

Methot - Karlsson
? - Ceci <- some kind of improvement over Phillips
Wiercioch/Cowen - Gryba <- rotate Wier and Cowen depending on opposition

So I guess I'd be a buyer and a seller, by giving up Michalek, Phillips, Conacher, Corvo, Kassian, maybe a prospect or two like Prince or Puempel for improvements at two positions, but I'd also give Hoff, Da Costa and Stone a chance to show me what they got the rest of the season.

I want BM to push for Stewart since he will cost less than Moulson and will likely be signed for less money too. I don't think we have to give up much for him too, I'd think Prince and 2015 2nd should do

I'd say go for Stewart. It could help the Sens make the playoffs this year, and itll give Ottawa the opportunity to take a good look at next year to decide the core with so many UFA's

I think way to many people are under valuing Stewart, both in the Ottawa forum and the trade rumour forum. If all it takes is Prince and a 2nd, by the time I wake up it'll be a done deal

What do I REALLY want?

I want a sign from the organization that this team is going to be committed to icing a competitive, "honest-chance-at-a-cup" team over the long term, and are not complacent to just be a bubble team for the next 15 years, spending 20% less than everyone else, scraping by as the plucky, perpetually-retooling team that is consistently selling itself as a "young-up-and-comer" while being perfectly content to rest on the laurels of winning a single playoff round every other year just to get the extra 3-to-5 gates' worth of revenue.

Phillips out because I think what he brings on the ice is replaceable internally. Still sucks that we lose a veteran to help a young team, but we have enough defensive d-men in Bingo that can easily be up here.

Michalek gone because I don't see why we would keep him. Not gonna get a whole lot, but an open spot on the roster alone is worth it.

Cowen I'm confused about. Wouldn't mind trading him, but then we'd need a young player coming back.

And then guys likes SDC, Prince (obviously gone), maybe Puempel if he's part of a bigger deal.

I'm not a melnyk hater but I've come to the point where I don't think we'll get that while he is signing the cheques.

I'd like to see us shuffle our back end a little bit. And acquire another top 6 forward.

Individually I don't think our D core is that bad, but they aren't gelling. We should flip a couple players just to change it up a bit.

Michalek + for Morris and Stone from PHX.

Cowen for Erhoff (I think Ottawa is a predicament where Cowen isn't helping us win right now, but not playing him will hurt his value, which is why they could part with him soon.)

Trade Phillips.

Our D-core is bad.

Getting a player like Ehrhoff would open up so many more opportunities for Karlsson, agreed. You now have two lines with offensive weapons on it. I think Ceci can mature into an Ehrhoff. I'd rather see us get a shutdown defensive guy similar to Methot.

That said, if you have to give up a player like Wiercioch to get Ehrhoff, you do it. Then you have THREE offensive weapons in Karlsson, Ehrhoff, and Ceci. Pair them with Method, Cowen, Gryba. Not bad imo. I'd like to flip Cowen, if his value is anything, and get a more veteran defensive defenseman.

I'm ok with what Murray has been saying... buying a player with term left. They aren't deep enough at forward or defense, so I'm down with adding either (or both).

Also, any pending UFA should be shopped to see if it would be worthwhile.

That seems counter-intuitive, and maybe in a way it is.

Find a decent return for the UFA's. If we get anybody, get guys with term or negotiate immediately with any incoming UFA's. Indifferent on who goes/who stays. Will look at it in balance of who comes back.

A lot of teams stating any deals need to be $ in, $ out. Either capped out, or self-imposed cap. Tightens market substantially.
"A lot of teams...," we're not the only ones. Tight market would translate into not many deals getting done I would think.

Not sure what it will take to land those 2. I can't properly gauge Erhoff's value. He's a good player but that contract carries quite a bit of risk despite the actual $ going forward being reasonable. I'm guessing his value is still quite high though so it might not be feasible to get him.

All you guys saying you would trade Cowen now make me hope and pray that none of you ever get a job with the Senators.

his value is quite literally at rock bottom now. What type of sense does it make to trade him now?

Why not take a step back and ask yourself why he's struggling so much? Anyone remember how much Drew Doughty sucked when he held out of training camp? It wasn't until January when he finally got back to his level of play, and that's Drew freaking Doughty.

Jared Cowen held out of camp, after spending an entire summer just rehabbing his hip, and not getting into hockey shape. Can anyone seriously be surprised that he's struggling now? He's weaker than before, and missed training camp so he's been behind all season.

At this point, it makes much more sense to just limit his minutes for this season, have him work very closely with the training staff over the summer, and see how he does next season. If he still sucks then, well fine, dump him for a bag of pucks, but until then, it's stupid to move him now for what would basically be next to nothing.

Let's be honest. This team isn't winning the Cup this year. It's more important to take a longer term approach right now, and that means maximsing assets over the long term and not going for reactionary short term fixes that could hurt the team long term.
