A 1st? Really? Methinks that's a bit hefty considering where he is in his career

Do not want. he is solid but aging and nothing more than a decent bottom pairing d-man at this point in his career.

a first from a contender in a weak draft like 2014 seems about right

This isnt me trying to say he is worth a 1st, but there would be so many teams offering a 2nd, some team will offer something extra in addition to a 2nd if the Sens were keen on trading him

A first in a weak draft seems reasonable. Sens may have to add a 3rd or 4th to get it done.

Ultimately, I think Phillips sticks around for another couple years.

I was just saying that for whoever gets him, they aren't getting a very fair deal. But that's the deadline. More mistakes will be made between now and the deadline than the rest of the year.

As for Chicago, they don't need D. They need a center if anything.

We have:

Keith-Seabrook
Hjalmarsson-Oduya
Leddy-Rozsival
Brookbank

So they're not going to overpay for Phillips when there are other options

Most of those other options you would have to overpay for, you know that right? You will not be getting an Edler for a song.

Whether or not they get traded is irrelevant, they're still on the market.

I've always liked the Sens and respect Phillips but I don't see how a team could give up a 1st for him. Sure, he's still solid but he's also 36 in a couple days - you'd be trading off your future for the unknown future (When does he retire? How will his play hold up as he ages?).

The amount you overpay for Edler is substantially more than for Phillips

I don't see what is so unreasonable about a late 1st for Phillips.

Most posters agree that he is worth a decent prospect and a 2nd so what's the big deal?

For the people saying that Gausted was an outlier, a pylon like Murray got traded for two 2nd round DP's last year. Add in that 2014 is supposed to be a relatively weak draft, and it would shock me if a desperate team ponied up a 1st round DP. I would expect that the actual return would be a 2nd & 3rd (or equivelant prospect), but a 1st wouldn't be outrageous.

I would expect thought that Murray opening position is asking for a 1st, knowing he'll probably get less.

Phillips means a lot to our team a first is what it would take to get him out but Murray and staff are considering a 2 year extension which in my opinion is what will happen.. He will get extended

Orpik+Glass+Adams+Bylsma+Zatkof+Pyatt would be the best/worst offer I would give up for him.

I think he might be worth a late 1st because the pending UFA defense market seems bare.

Phillips is very good in the playoffs, even though he is famous for that SCF blunder. He steps up his game.

If you're Ottawa, you might as well start the bidding high. They can always come down off of the first if they really want to get something for him, but why not see if someone will bite? It's only an outrageous asking price if someone isn't willing to pay it.

There are a number of D men being floated out there right now but who knows how realistic any of them are, or what the exact asking prices for them are. If there is a team that misses out on other players, or a couple of teams get in a bidding war for Phillips because they feel like they have to do something, then it wouldn't shock me to see someone give up a 1st or conditional 1st.

I don't think that is necessarily what he is worth right now, but once again, when teams get desperate, they sometimes overextend themselves for players.
