Nikita Filatov.

I still remember the 2008 draft when the Leafs traded up to get Luke Schenn and I was pissed! I thought that Nikita Filatov was going to be the next Bure and the last thing the Leafs needed to start the rebuild was a stay-at-home defense.

Last I heard he was traded to Ottawa for a 3rd round pick and now playing in the KHL.

Any others?

Hah, the first player that popped into my head when I read the title was Filatov. I thought the trade to Ottawa was a steal and that he'd stick.

I remember on the old sportsnet website, when they used to put player descriptions on each players profile, it had Gagner described as a "franchise" centre or something like that.. he clearly hasn't remotely achieved that. I thought the description was overly ambitious, but I still thought he'd be better then he is.

He had a pretty solid rookie season, especially given his age (49 pts as an 18 year old). But never really progressed from there.

I thought Kyle Beach was going to be a 30-30 guy but I'm glad he busted because he seems like a real **** bag.

I thought he was going to be the next "Lucic", also happy that he's busted as well.

Gilbert Brule.

Looked like a perennial 60-70pt forward with sandpaper. He was an absolute beast with the Giants but was totally rushed into the NHL and it ruined his career.

Drinking issues were huge, that guy stumbling into Creve Coeur Ice Rink (HS job for me) and heading over to the beer/food booth for the 9 hole course and just continuing to slam em back. It was sad to see, nice guy, but the drink totally held him back.

Had something very similar happen to an old friend of mine, competed like crazy, owned every level of hockey he played, quit at 15 and proceeded to drink him into a stupor....

Brule, Zherdev, Picard

Pretty much all of the Doug McClean 1st round picks, minus Nash.

First name to come to mind. I essentially thought he was bust-proof with the style of game he played, even if he didn't achieve his offensive expectations. I thought his ceiling (comparing him to someone in hindsight) would have been a better offensive version of a guy like Parise, and his floor would have been a 2nd-3rd line grinder-type player.

Claude Giroux.

Was supposed to be the best player in the world but didn't even make Team Canada.

Also thought Marek Schwarz and Hannu Toivonen were going to be great, although goalies are basically a crapshoot most of the time.

Steve Mason has been better lately, but after that rookie year, I expected him to be something special.

I also thought Linus Klasen would be a decent 2nd/3rd line guy.

Granlund. Hyped to death as a perennial 100pts scorer LOL. What one stupid lacrosse goal can do to you...
