Yep. I was glad to see he got rid of it so we wouldn't have to have the burden of keeping it and using it. Apparently the Islanders were good with 3rd rounder, but Holmgren insisted they take the 2nd rounder.

I know that 2nd rounders are rarely worth much, and rarely amount to anything, but the more picks you have, the better the chance of getting a player in the rough.

Good, I was just thinking "I hope we start spending more on D. Let's have an expensiver, mediocre-er defense."

Load up the trade cannon and fire Mez and Gross out of town please.

Gus is definitely available now. If he's that good someone will offer picks for him.

They got better and didnt give up any of the kids...I am ok with it.

Curious to see what comes next. Obviously turning Grossmann or Mez into picks would make this a very good move...but who know what Homers got up his sleeve. Its curious to me that Mac has such a low cap hit...making me wonder if they wanna make room for something.

And no way to your last question.
We could certainly have been in a situation in 2015 where a player we had ranked in the 20s falls to us in the 2nd round just like Hagg did this past year. I'm fine with the deal as a rental and think we'll end up replacing that 2015 pick, but if we extend MacDonald it'll be Meszaros/Grossmann all over again except probably more expensive.

The Flyer way brother. Homer is already typing up the 4/24 extension.

If he's a healthy scratch, why wouldn't you wait for him to hit waivers? You know that's Holmgren's track record.

Why did they toss in Mangene?
Not that someone would actually miss him...

As far as I know contract count was 49 before the McD trade so there was no immediate need to get rid of a contract unless there is another trade following shortly before they can ship out a defensemen.

But one who is MORE mobile... I think we will come out ok as long as we REPLACE that 2nd rounder by shipping someone *cough mez/Gross *cough out

Gus is not viewed around the league as a better player than MacDonald. Just admit it.

Im just glad we didnt give up a 1st round pick, if he can play more like he did the last 2 years instead of how he has played this year, then I can definitely live with this trade. And either way, he's an upgrade over Mez and Gross. Just hope this doesnt keep Eric Gus out of the starting line up

I would say a tougher Matt Carle with a better shot, better D zone D, worse outlet and less mobility is more apt! (ie a #3-4 who can look better at times and awful at others... and has flaws but still useful.)

i'm guessing we will be taking on something else. It was my understanding we were at the limit.

interesting to see the understanding here.

If he actually played over the inferior players the Flyers org has a fascination with, he might be.

He's more mobile than Grossmann and Schenn. He'll be fine on the second pair with Streit.

I'd like to see:
Coburn-Timonen
MacDonald-Streit
Gus-Schenn

Mez-Gill

Grossmann gone for whatever they can get. He's not even doing the things that made him somewhat successful last year (physical play, net presence, etc.)

MacDonald's better in the offensive zone than Grossmann or Schenn, but loses a lot of puck battles in the defensive zone.

Similarly to acquiring Mason last year, I question the move since MacDonald will be UFA in July. I'm fairly certain that, if they sign MacDonald, it will be for more than I want them to pay, so I'm not sure how I really feel about this move.

If they use MacDonald as a 4/5, he'll be fine, but I don't want to see them paying him $4.5/year as a 4/5...
