Saying Gus is better than McDonald is simply ludicrous. And I really like Gus.
He's not the next Orr, and nobody has claimed that. He is cheap talent who has performed well in a top 4 role when given a chance and has done even better on the 3rd pairing, and has earned a roster spot. That alone is an oddity for homegrown Flyers D talent. Yet they bench him in favor of veterans, because that's the Flyers mentality. It restricts their ability to develop D, and that should be highly concerning considering their investment in D prospects in the last two drafts.

Pitkanen is the wild card... but he may never play again!

I think they are thinking if Kimmo goes they are ****ed... they are anyway, but this gives some contingency and flexibility into the summer. (though not much really... rock and hard place really.)

They basically are ensuring they dont end up with Mez, Klesla, Morris, Gilbert, Phillips or Hannan as the best option!
This is a good point; sadly, the Flyers may have to do this annually to keep the D afloat until they can flail about at Morin and Hagg's development.

I'm quite tired of draining draft picks to shore up the defense.

I'm not against trading draft picks to get a defenseman, but they should be used to get a good defenseman. Would rather give up a little more for someone better, because any trade made between now and July has to be done to be a + in 2 years.

Probably not a good idea to bring in players whose teammates are always better when he's not on the ice.

whats the point of this move?

When I first heard about this guy being available, for some reason I knew Homer was going to trade for him

Just an unnecessary move IMO as it wont be turning us into a contender

Keep your god damn early draft picks and build through the draft Homer, it's how you win a Cup

Advanced stats are interesting but are not the end all be all for player evaluation. According to the advanced stat crowd two years ago, Matt Carle and Ryan Suter were pretty much the same player. Let's see how he plays tomorrow before trashing the deal.

Same here. I would call that a win, take my ball and go home.

Whoa, now. The "advanced stats crowd" wasn't saying that. BSH was saying that while cherrypicking some stats and ignoring others, as well as ignoring context, to claim that stuff.

It is basically like the 30-somethings parties I occasionally attend. (a few older friends)

Most of the talent has been tied up in long term contracts long ago, or are a bad fit... so do the 30 somethings chance on the 1-2 top end still available, or settle for above average talent instead of going home with nothing?

The Flyers took the option a lot of 30 something bachelors do... as they did what a lot of those bachelors did 5-10 years ago, try and win now and often instead of develop a prospect, which is harder work but more rewarding.

(easily the most misogynistic thing I have ever wrote here... but also a pretty good analogy I reckon! )

Not totally thrilled about giving up to 2015 pick. Hopefully it means somebody else is going and a pick is coming back to replace it.

As far as MacDonald himself is concerned, I'm cautiously optimistic. NY has had him playing above his head from what I've seen. Maybe with some easier minutes on the 2nd or 3rd pairing, he would look better. I guess we'll see.

Well, technically Corsi HAS to be used in relation to team's strength and weakness also. For example, Grossmann Or Mez, who are struggling might not have as bad of a Corsi but play on a LOT better team.

I would be on the side that is freaking, but MacDonald should do well in a 4 spot on a team. He is better than Grossmann, Schenn, and Mezsaros.

Timonen-Coburn
Streit-MacDonald

Should be the top 4.

I look at it like this. Less than 4 mil a year is a good year (yes even 4 mil is to much, but for a #4, 4 or less is a good deal)

If he's a 3rd pairing guy, then fine, but the Flyers aren't going to pay him that way, and need to recoup that if they trade Meszaros. Even if they get a 2 + 3 for Meszaros, it's still a downgrade. If not, and Meszaros walks, they've given up assets to replace a player they likely could have already done so with from the Phantoms, and have fewer assets to trade for the top-line defenseman they've been looking for for eons.

Schenn-Gus is what the 3rd pairing should be, but it probably wont happen
