Phillips supporters on this forum don't get it. He's not just slightly less than what he used to be, he's become dung. It's not that he's being played in the wrong role as a top 4, it's that he doesn't belong in this league. He hasn't just been frustrating at times, he sucks always, number 4 always seems to be there when we shat the bed. And you don't hire a guy for leadership, nostalgia or philanthropy at $2.5M. It's now clear to me the issue with this team is management, specifically BM.

He's slow, he's not physical, can't make a ****ing offensive play if his life depended on it and does not strike fear into anyone but sens fans.

He's awful on the ice and I just don't buy the leadership argument. He's experienced and respected but far from being indispensable. Other players can bring more to the table than what he does.

Now were blocking one of Wiercioch, Borowiecki or Claesson from getting a regular spot on the blueline because he's been loyal.

I hate that Maclean keeps saying that the best players play because it has just not been true this year.

if Cowen, Weirchioch and Karlsson played to their defensive potential then Phillips would get minimal mins

going into the season Phillips WAS the bottom pairing guy. Unfortunantly Cowen has been just terrible. Karlsson is getting walked countless times just like Phillips and Weir is just slow.

I dont understand why ppl worry about the vet who is almost done as opposed to the guys who are supposed to make up our defense for the next 10 years

Can you show me examples of Wiercioch getting beaten to the outside? Because I could show you many of Phillips.

I'm not against this move but have some problems with it. If we traded him for a 2nd or a 3rd round pick we would be looking for a veteran D man this summer and probably give up a 2nd or 3rd + prospect just to get one.

Now, what bothers me with this deal is we pretty much have Phillips playing top4 minutes and PP for the next 2 years when he should be a bottom pairing guy who gets PK minutes and no PP minutes.

This should really help our powerplay because Mac puts this guy out there when out offensive phenoms are ont he bench!!!!!!!!!!!! LOOOOL

Sentimental SIGHning. Nothing more

The dude is a replaceable bottom pairing defenceman that can contribute on the PK. He has not been the same since volchenkov left

Now we have a huge logjam at LD and we are going to have to flip a young guy with potential to give room to this guy.

REALLY disappointed with this move as most are.

Of all the things this team has failed to do, or done badly, this one takes the cake for me.

If you want a good comparable, check out the recent Stuart signing by the Jets. Yes Stuart is younger, but he and Phillips play similar games and are valued in almost exactly the same way by the team.

But the problem is that they are not the same. If this was a 29 year old Phillips who still played at a good level then this extension would have been fine and the value would have been fine.

You have the right to your own opinion, but as someone who watches Jets games (I originally come from Wpg and am a lifelong fan), I can assure you they are playing at about the same level.

Yup, signing phillips to a two year deal that pays him 100k more than the league average is the worst thing the franchise has ever done.

Letting chara walk, trading a prime havlat for peanuts, drafting daigle and letting daniel alfredsson leave don't even come close.

If this were a 29 year old Phillips he'd be looking at 4 million a season easy.

People are blowing the dollars he's making way way out of proportion.

It is such a shame we can't "favourite" posts here like we can on twitter. This one is a gem.

The only reason I don't mention that is because of the success the Sens had with Heatley following the trade. Back to back 50 goal seasons, and a cup finals appearance that Heatley played a huge part in reaching.

In retrospect, the trade was a mistake. Hossa would be dynamite on the Sens right now, while what happened with Heatley is well known.

Karlsson, Methot, Cowen, Gryba, Wiecioch, Ceci, Borowiecki, are all on the team in addition to Phillips. Claesson and Wikstrand should be given a fair chance to make it as well.

While veteran presence is laudable, Phillips is not the right choice to give it. He is slow, and no-where near where he was three years ago.
