Yup... That was some brilliant theater right there! You can tell they have a high level of respect for each other.

Someone else who should have interviewed Burkie is Steve Simmons. Maybe he and Feaster should have tag teamed...

That was some funny stuff. I'm glad we have guys like Burke and Tortorella around to bring a little color to the league. I don't think it was scripted persay. It was more just how two people familiar with each other trash talking a bit. Although I do think Burke was a genuinely irritated by Duthie's refusal to delineate the difference between 'in-play' and 'untouchable'.

yeah, that's the vid.

Duthie is so intimidated by Burke even if he knows Burke wouldn't do anything bad to him.

Burke is trying to suppress a smile almost through the whole interview. He and Duffie do this all the time. Not sure what the hub-bub is about. It's a fun interview. It's like the one where Burke told Duffie, "It's none of your business or TSN's business". Wish they were all like that.

I love Duthie. He's awesome. He tries to give the fans what they want to hear and sacrifices his own dignity on live TV for it

Handles it very well too, in my opinion.

Don't see anything wrong with it, Burke was just making the point that Smid wasn't for trade.

It was not scripted but Burke and Duthie know eachother pretty well. One of the things that Burke hates is when reporters that change his words and also people who make rumors by changing his words. He is a lawyer, a very precise speaker.
I am not a huge Duthie fan because most of the time when he is trying to be funny i just dont find him funny.

Duthies role is not just to ask questions and get you your information, he also has to try to entertain you and in a way represent you. I have a couple of buddies in tv and they say there are very few people in the NHL that you can press on answers you already know and one is Burke, in the last couple years, and the other is Bettman. As a journalist you already know answers but your viewers do not and that causes an issue. Your job is to represent the viewer. So whether you know the information or not you need to show the viewer that you are asking the questions.
Sometimes you also need to try to find fire where there is none. The viewers and ratings and the business demand it.

This entire duthie vs burke interview, and smid reference, was a pretty good gag on viewers and reporters hearing what they want to hear and trying to make things that dont exist. Burke got it. The studio got it. Duthie had fun with it. Everyone saw what Duthies underlying point of fun was. Look on this board and you will see lots of examples of the types of people they are laughing at, while also making fun of the ratings driven business itself (that burke has seen first hand on many occassions)

Also as an Oilers fan i can see some shots in that interview...subtle ones. Based on information that is known regarding Smid in Calgary, and OILer fans wanting to crucify MacT for not getting seven 1st RD picks for Smid, i wasnt blind to that angle of Duthies play with Burke.

If you saw the interview you know what I'm talking about. The disagreement centered on Smid and whether he was tradeable or not. Burke looked very sullen and unhappy in my opinion and looked like he wanted to reach through the camera and strangle Duthie. Hopefully we can have a video soon.

Click on the Brian Burke 1 on 1 video.
I thought Burke was going to reach through the camera and hit him

If you ask me it was the best part of the early part of Tradecentre. It was obviously an act too IMO.

That just makes for good T.V., its never personal.

I like blunt though and Burke is that in spades.

It was just a few days ago when I think Duthie had Burke on and mentioned that he played flag football, and Burke gave him a hard time about that too in a dead pan manner.

It all plays out under the same tent. Not much point in making the distinction.

Sorry Duthie bothers you so much.

I've got no problem with Duthie, he's good at his job. Fair little fun argument they had here. Burke said he's not trading Smid, so Duthie said he's untouchable then, and Burke said no, he's not untouchable but they're not trading him.

Funny and weird at the same time.
