Nash for E. Staal would be tremendous. Both can be maddeningly inconsistent but god damn is it better to have one that's a highly skilled center.

Too bad it probably would never happen.

Yea, too bad.

Because spewing more assets for overpriced players has been working so well.

Plus Nash wouldn't waive his NTC when Carolina wanted him to play with Staal. And until someone shows me otherwise, I believe Nash still has his NMC.

He does for next year. Then two years of NTC.

If Carolina is looking to trade or trades Eric Staal,it could benefit the Rangers. It opens up more teams for the Rangers to trade Marc to if they can't get a contract done. Marc won't be of the NY or Carolina mindset(if that's the case). Other teams won't be concerned about not being able to re-sign Staal if Rutherford decides to break up the Staal family reunion. Jordan would be stuck in Carolina after leaving Pittsburgh and giving up free agency at 25. Will Rutherford even pursue Marc if he is available. The two Staal brothers have OK together. Sather's future is #1 on the to do list. Any possible FO changes. Get them done in May. Figure out Staal's future is 1A. The Rangers will get more in a trade if Carolina isn't an option.

Do you think he may be declining now?

70 points at least every year since his rookie year (pro rated for shortened seasons).

This year he is on pace for 66 points...not off by a lot. Shooting 2.4% below career average. PPG playoff player, he is known for bringing his best then.

I know it's a shallow analysis and I haven't watched him play. So why do you feel he is or may be declining?

Also, Staal goes beast mode in the playoffs.

I can't see Rangers fans enjoying Staal anymore than Nash. He's as big, as physical, his stride is long so he's fast but he looks like he's floating around a lot. I just don't see Staal adding anything Nash doesn't already bring, except that he's a center, and maybe that's enough. Might also be weighed down by his team, but when I watch the Hurricanes it always seems like his lines just can't sustain time in the offensive zone.

Frankly, if they were exactly identical players then the fact that he is a center is already enough. I'd gladly pay an extra 400k for a center version of Nash.

I think E. Staal is better though (not by a whole much in the regular season) but he brings it big time especially in the playoffs.

Edit: Are there more people that watch the Canes? I'd love a more detailed scouting report on E. Staal.

Just speaking my mind, but a few thoughts on Marc going to Carolina.

1. You grow very close to your teammates over a pretty short period of time. A brother is a brother, sure, but you have your best friends on your team. Why is it a given that he will choose to spend his time with his brothers instead of friends? You know, I don't quite follow the supposed clear logic.

2. Carolina is Carolina, ie its not NYC. Sure, its probably a great place to raise children if you have millions, maybe NY is not optimal. But its still de facto not the most luring place in the league.

3. Have anyone seen Carolina the last few years? ERIC Staal in particular. Stats is stats, we all know how little the mean. Honestly, I would love to hear others opinion on this, but when I've seen Eric play lately he has just not been a very valuble player. And it shows on Carolinas record. I mean, he is good on the PP (he is definitely still a very good PP player, no ifs or buts about it). He is sometimes good down low. He is very mediocre in all other areas, and don't seem that motivated.

4. Jordan Staal is Jordan Staal. Not a dominating top 2 line player. Lets say they give Marc Staal 6m over 6 years. They basically have Eric's 8.25m + Jordan's 6m + Marc's 6m (20.25m), plus Semin's 7m + Skinner's 5.75m, totaling 34m tied up in the Staal brothers and Semin. IS THAT EVEN A PO TEAM? They are EXTREMELY FAR from being a PO team with Jordan and Eric... Do they make the PO's once in the five - six years the have invested in the bro's?

FWIW, the Hurricanes fans I know are starting to very seriously wonder if the problem with the team isn't Eric Staal. The team has underachieved, a lot, in his tenure. Yes, he has a Cup and a Conf Finals appearance, but nonetheless. Outside of those successes, these are really the same questions that we heard with Nash in Columbus. Is Staal really a player to build around and be successful? I'm not sure, and Canes fans don't seem to be anymore either.

One of the biggest knocks on him is that he's been an extremely, extremely slow starter. Usually, by the time he picks it up, they have to make up so much ground that they're in an impossible situation. We know, especially from this year, what having a bad October-December can do to a team. It's been a problem.

Larry Brooks and Darren Dreger have reported the Canes are looking to cut the payroll. The floor will be $52M-$53M. Jim Rutherford will retire or move upstairs with Ron Francis replacing him if ownership OK's it. Cam Ward and his contract are available if another team is interested. Ward is owed $6.7M and $6.8M in the next 2 years. That team has made once since 2006. That was in 2009. Five straight years of no playoffs. Carolina has $49M(cap) committed for next season. Eric Staal makes $9.25M and $9.5M in the next 2 years. $1.65M increase for Skinner. Faulk is a group II with no arg rights.

6 years/$36M for Staal. NMC in the first 3 years. Limited NTC in last 3 years. Staal gives the Rangers a list of teams they can't trade him to. 6 teams. The Rangers agree to make the NMC effective immediately.

Quote:
(b) A no-Trade clause or a no-move clause that is negotiated as part of an extension of an SPC entered into pursuant to Section 50.5(f) may become effective immediately upon registration of, but prior to the effective date of, such SPC extension, provided: (i) the Player would otherwise have been eligible as of the immediately preceding July 1 prior to signing the SPC extension to have a no-Trade or no-move clause pursuant to Section 11.8; and (ii) the Club and the Player, who are parties to such SPC extension, agree that the no-Trade or no-move clause is effective immediately upon execution of the SPC extension (or at some later date agreed to by the Club and the Player) and evidence such agreement in writing in the SPC.
$8M annual salaries in the first 3 years. $4M in the last 3 years. The Rangers pay $24M of the $36M in the first 3 years. Dan Girardi has $20M of the $33M in the first 3 years.

A few months ago I postulated about the possibility of Eric Staal being moved. I guess there are some legs to this. Not suggesting I had some inside information, but really it is a game of numbers.

That Semin deal was universally panned, and now he is unmovable. Carolina isn't a market where they can miss the playoffs and keep covering their operating expenses, so buyouts are not really an option.

The Canes have made the playoffs once since Eric Staal got off of his ELC. Once. So yeah he does need to be moved. That $8.25 cap hit is very high, but there isn't term on it, so Carolina can pick up a Mil on that and be alright.

Carolina is the next team to re-build, and my guess is that they want to do it fast since they've missed the playoffs 5 years running. They need new leadership where that can't happen. They need a new core.

If Carolina is looking to cut payroll, I see not conceivable way the Rangers can acquire Staal. They just don't have enough assets, primarily due to the Nash/MSL deals.

Canes will want defense. Girardi and McDonagh are going nowhere. Wouldn't make sense to trade Staal when you're trying to acquire his brother (or does it, haha). Klein wouldn't be a principle piece of that deal, or at all. John Moore? That's not gonna be enough. I cringe at the price.

Nash for E. Staal would be a straight up trade, not an asset filled move.

Regardless, no way Nash waives his NMC.

I'd love to do this though. Staal is easily the better player. Regardless of the consistency issues.

Well, I am not saying we should or could or whatever, but Step would obviously be a good starting point. Not

Nash wouldn't waive his NMC to go to Carolina the first time, now he's gonna do it? I think it's time to drop any thought of that happening.

With Hall throwing a hissy fit, could he be the target for a trade?

He would garner quite a hefty return, but I think he's perfect for this team. A bigger, more skilled replacement for Callahan.

Imagine having him and Kreider flanking the LWs for the next decade.

Match-Up Nightmare.
