Misread a text, sorry. Both picks, MTL's 2nd and the #Isles 2015 5th, are conditional. If Habs miss playoffs, no picks change hands.

I stand corrected, thanks.

Although, prior to the deal, the Habs were solidly in the playoffs.

The trade was Vanek+cond. 5th for Collberg+cond. 2nd

If the Habs miss the playoffs, it's just Vanek for Collberg. If the Habs make the playoffs, the picks exchange hands as well.

Anyway, I'd rather have done the Moulson one anyway. We have a better chance than most teams at signing him in the offseason, no point in giving up two solid assets for him now. Not really a big fan of Moulson either though.

Moulson seems like the kind of player Koivu works well with. Rounds out the top-6 very well. Interesting to see if we fare any better in the playoffs with our added depth.

If Zucker ~ Collberg, for sure would have done the Vanek deal.

Moulson 0.31 gpg / 0.69 ppg
Vanek 0.35 gpg / 0.88 ppg

Vanek or Moulson?

Don't think we had the cap room for Vanek. Moulson's cap hit is less than half of Vanek's.

Also wouldn't be surprised if we end up retaining some of Mitchell's $2.5M salary next year.

We'd all have taken a bag of pucks yesterday for Mitchell. His inclusion in this is a benefit as it gets rid of his cap hit next year. This is Moulson for 2 picks. The 4th liner exchange is nothing but accounting. This is better than a pick and a prospect for Vanek.

Moulson will be a much better fit for Koivu. I've watched Vanek a lot lately and he has been very unimpressive except for Sunday. With Moulson you can get someone who is good on the forcheck and around the net with a great shot. Don't see how anyone can be mad about getting a guy who has scored 129 (!) goals since start of 2009-2010 season. Guy is a master in front of the net. We also ditched $1.9M in salary for next year with Mitchell and finally got a little size on the 4th line. Haula/Fontaine/Mitchell wasn't going to cut it against the top teams in the West come April.

We won't. Buffalo needs it to reach the cap floor, and it's only $1.9m anyways.

Not a whole lot of difference there, 1 additional point every 5 games or so.

Additional $2m in cap space this summer is an underrated part of this deal.

Can you retain salary and not the cap hit? I don't think I've heard of such a thing.

No, you retain salary, you retain cap. No salary will be retained.

You said you wouldn't be surprised if we retained salary... I don't think we would, because I'm not sure you can retain salary (real dollars) only without retaining the accompanying cap hit, which I don't think Buffalo would even want us to do, as they are going to need to spend to reach the floor.

Sounds like the Wild couldn't take Moulson's salary without a reduction, thus the 4th liner exchange. Buffalo didn't want to retain salary, so they took Mitchell for Mccormick to give us the slice of space we needed.

So the Wild CAN'T retain salary.

This is such a great move . Gives us a chance to compete with a St. Louis/Chicago this year for a small price. Proves to moulson/Vanek we are serious about winning here for next summer when we certainly go after Vanek and maybe if Moulson seems to fit we target him.

Chuck fletcher is a VERY good GM. We are spoiled. Flair too.

I think I'd have rather given another pick this year (not a first) than a second later on though. Not bad...but...
