if karlsson asks for a trade cause the going gets tough then he is a mentally fragile player which i dont think he is

ppl are jumping to stupid conclusions now and what ifs

Karlsson is part of the problem btw he has to shore up his putrid defense from this western trip

Karlsson would ask for a trade to move to a team committed to spending what it takes to win a Cup and to play with other players of a similar caliber.

Oh so you know karlsson and he said that? why is tavares in nyi? why did nash stay in cbj for so long? why did Horton go to CBJ? why are there even players signing in FLA and PHX?

who says we aren't committed to spending eventually?

at no point did Melnyk say he will never spend to the cap.

The worst thing ottawa can do is go and sign a clarkson, ehrhoff or leino type contract

again more bs spread around these boards

A lot of people are asking the same question and I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved in the next few years if things don't turn around for the NYI.

if we had a legit top 4 guy....

Ceci could be in the AHL developing. No problems at all. Key for the future but could upgrade him now.

Gryba is a guy who can play but he's a depth guy. The team shouldn't feel they have to hold a roster spot for him to develop.

Wiercioch is another guy who could go easily. He needs to be bottom pairing right now and the I don't see so much in him that I wouldn't move him.

That's three right there.

Karlsson and Cowen are key for the future and are on the team now. The others can go. We only have 6-7 spots on d. You don't want them all in same age anyway.

its all but confirmed when Melynk said the new TV deal does not make them a cap team, we will never be a cap team with Melynk as owner, players generally dislike playing for budget teams.

again he said we will spend wisely as he should. We should NOT be a cap team until we need to resign our high end talent if they pan out.

He never said we wouldnt be a cap team again. I fully expect us to spend more next season

Like i said more bs from these boards

that will have to be done in the offseason though

notice how contracts with term were barely moved this deadline? teams jsut dont commit to long term deals at the deadline without knowing what the free agent and trade market hold in the summer

Jan 29 Cyril Leeder suggests the Sens can now compete with the higher salaried teams. http://www.ottawasun.com/2014/01/29/...o-sign-players

10-day renewal period (Jan. 29 to Feb. 7)

Feb 18 Melnyk confirms that although Cyril Leeder suggested otherwise, the Sens will continue to be a budget team. http://www.ottawasun.com/2014/02/18/...s-sens-chances

spending more isn't saying much though.

it is all but confirmed he won't spend to the cap, because he said that he doesn't want to be in a position if the cap starts going down to be stuck at an older higher cap, and he believes the cap will go down eventually.

In the off-season we lost Alf, Silf, and a declining Gonchar (oh, and Latendresse and Lundin). We gained MacArthur and Ryan (oh, and Corvo). But most importantly Karlsson, Spezza, Michalek were all back from injury, and we haven't suffered any major injuries this year. So on paper we should have had at least a slightly better record this year, even though Melnyk didn't let Murray spend more money (to keep Alf, for example).

I blame mostly two things: 1- the players who came back from injury have all been far from what they were capable of doing before their injury, and 2- the coach has been unable to use his roster to the fullest.

This team played its best when our Captain and his two As all missed a few games. Lessons needed to be drawn from this. Players needed to be put in a position to succeed: limit Phillips' ice time, play Neil sporadically, don't ever play Kassian, don't give 1st line ice time to what should be your 4th line, don't use Condra (defensive specialist) on your 1st line, give talented youth a chance (like you did out of necessity a season ago), etc.

Murray isn't entirely blameless either. What is the point of Kassian? Use the bench to rotate some of your youth: Hoffman, Conacher, etc. Guys like Hoffman and Da Costa have nothing left to prove in the AHL, they should be given the opportunity to sink or swim at the NHL level. Hoffman's opportunity has finally come, but Da Costa has been sent down even though he made a great impression. Conacher went from being a regular player to being lost on waivers entirely.

If what you want is toughness, call up BoroCop. Rotate him with Phillips, Cowen, Gryba, Wiercioch, it's not like any of them has proven to be indispensable this year (Gryba has been the best of the bunch IMO). At least BoroCop will use his toughness during the play and not for a useless and very occasional stage fight.

If money's tight, to the point that we have to lose Conacher on waivers and give up picks just to get a rental like Hemsky, why do we need to pay $2.5M/yr to keep Phillips while at this point in his career it is debatable whether he represents an improvement over Cowen, Wiercioch or BoroCop, and while we will still need to sign a top 4 ahead of him on the depth chart (which we probably won't precisely because we used a big chunk of the required money on Phillips).

That sounds all well and good HSF but he said he wants to get Murray the cup before he retires and that Murray only has a few years left. If he is that hell bent on winning the cup for Murray then he should give Murray free reign to spend to the cap until he finally retires. The cap isn't going down anytime soon and he's just being delusional. Also his comments about the tv deal not changing much doesn't inspire confidence that Murray will have that much more to work with next season.

I think this is an appropriate time to re-iterate what I said in the beginning of the season.

I have an extremely close source to Melnyk who's telling me he's playing the broke game to get a Casino even though he is very well off.

It's pretty obvious to anyone paying attention that he is trying to leverage Sens fans for a Casino. The problem is that plan has 0 chance of working and is going to alienate a lot of fans in the process. This city didn't care about the Sens when we actually needed saving, why would they care about his desire for a Casino?

Yeah, he has mishandled the goalies. Lehner Player of Week, starts Anderson. Anderson struggling a ton, goes almost a month between starts for Lehner. It's just a huge mess.

lol ya star of the week against who? one good week followed by crap crap crap and more crap, the guy cant win and he is hardly good enough to play, It's not a huge mess-- he either isn't ready or he isn't good enough to be a starter in the nhl.
That isn't really a thing you can blame on the coach

Melnyk may be cheap for his own reasons but come on guys this team was good enough to make the playoffs this is all on MacLean!

Dozens of examples but here's one. Remember the winning streak by Lehner when he took over after Anderson had played so badly and then was injured. Anderson comes back and right away MacLean announces Anderson is back he's the #1 goalie he plays. MacLean wants to avoid a non existent goalie controversy by proclaiming Andy as #1 which he is but he doesn't have to do or say anything there is no problem. All we are thinking is that Lehner is playing great so let him finish out the string but no the coach knows better. Big loss follows and Lehner gets cold as ice while Anderson plays but mostly loses. When he puts Lehner back in, he blows chunks. While Anderson improved a bit as time went on Lehner didn't seem the same after that. Those losses put them behind the eight ball for the rest of the season.

He had an opportunity to ' spend WISELY' last off-season.

UM should have signed Alfie and made a push with him in the short -term. Why? Because all our big contracts expired in two years anyways! Why couldn't we have made one last push with our captain? It doesn't mean go out and sign players to a 8- year deal.
How about just raise our payroll so we can take a next step, especially after making the playoffs.

It's sad because we could had been more competitive if he had spent some more money - and we still would have been in a good position down the road cap wise.

Being 26th in the NHL in payroll, especially after the year we just had and being in a Canadian market is unacceptable.

After seeing what Melnyk did last off-season and reading the recent quotes from him , i am not sure how anyone could be optimistic going forward with him running the show.

Bryan Murray

Please explain to me how this on ice product is better then the on ice product in 2008-2008

The goal is to get better... Honestly we are further away from a cup now then when he took over.

This team you see is almost 7Years of Bryan Murray's vision

Next season
Phillips,Neil,Greening,Cowen and Wiercioch make a combined 12.5 million

Teams on a budgets can't be doing that

melnyk of course. simply because he has the last word. if he says budget, its budget and murray is tied to these chains. nonetheless he comes in 2nd for not adressing the teams needs ealier and at the deadline. 3rd is maclean for not giving this team any synergy. still line-juggling 60 games in? ok...

It takes defense around 300 games to adapt to the NHL... Knowing this why has BM traded our 1st this year and collected soon to be UFAs in Ryan, Mcarthur, Spezza, etc

I was talking about defense all summer, saying it is insane to expect the goaltending to do what it did last year again.

Blows my mind BM who had been around the game for so long would put so much faith in an inexpierenced blue line.

He's retarded then... The cap is going to 80-90 million in the next few seasons and them the next USA TV deal in 7Yrs will push the cap to 100+

The NHL is thriving, something like 19% of people who watch hockey make 100+K a year and with the way sports rights are going the nhl is poised to get the massive US deal it has always craved

I think it will be Bettman's final act as commish... Landing the major tv contract

I mean who needs those, he is going for a cup

Melnyk told Murray to give the alf what he wanted, Murray tried to play smart guy and save a few dollars pissing off the alf and sending him on his way
Yeah because you knew ben bishop was going to be a star goalie...
