In the meantime, we need immediate help and that can only be done through Free Agency. Lou's now got the financial backing(New Owners) and the impending Cap increase to at least DO SOMETHING Constructive with the Roster now.
I agree with all of this.

- Stack the top6 with FA and maybe a trade
- Draft forwards who are expected to fill the supporting roles
- MAYBE one of the draftees or skaters already in the system (Wood, Boucher, Kujawinski, Bell, Matteau) prove to be more
- Then we have either a surplus to trade from, players who can step in in case of injury, or youngsters who can replace vets in the Top6 when the time comes.

This is an offseason where the Devils can build a contender AND build a foundation. That work has already been done on D (vets and prospect pipeline), so draft forwards this year. Next year go back to drafting BPA.

32. Florida - They have Luongo for the near future, but don't have a top tier guy in the pipeline.

33. Edmonton - Apparently they would have taken Fucale last year but missed out on him by one pick and ended up trading down.

34. Calgary - Maybe a long shot, they already have Jon Gillies who was USA WJC starter over Demko this year.

35. NY Islanders - Definite possibility here.

Obviously they won't be trading with us to get Demko, but they could be leapfrogging each other to get it done.

Did you forget about the LOU-phole? Lou could draft Demko and then trade him to any of those teams for a prospect or something.

For instance:

- Sign Moulson and Hemsky
- Trade for Evander Kane

Moulson-Zajac-Jagr
Kane-Henrique-Hemsky
Boucher-Elias-Ruutu
Carter-Josefson-Zubrus

Not spectacular, but would be much better than this year's and certainly score more goals.

We joked about it on the prospects board. It wouldn't be that much different than how the NBA does those "draft-then trade" deals. We'd just have to go through an awkward dog and pony show of taking photos on stage.

Everyone would be flipping out and yelling, then Lou would trade him for some great offensive prospect...

Wait does this not look like a pretty ridiculously good group of forwards to anyone else? THREE top 6 forwards? How are any of that top-6 along with Patty and Ruutu NOT top-6 players? Evander Kane is 22 years old and has 17 less career goals than Zajac. Throw a better LW on that third line and you'd probably have one of the better second lines in the league.

Everyone should look at the list of forwards by points and see what kind of points are put up between the 91st and 180th slot. Those are your de facto second liners. 49 players cracked 60 points this season and 2 of them were defensemen. 16 teams had only one player in that list, and a fair number of them are in the playoffs (Minnesota, Detroit, LA, CBJ, Montreal, Rangers, TBL). And the Rangers and Wings in particular had 0 players who reached the 60-point plateau.

The 35-55 point guys don't get enough credit for being extremely valuable players and surefire top-sixers.

Not amazing. But I'm salivating at the mouth to have this kind of forward group. I guess after this year, I will accept anything. This group will definitely hammer in goals.

That is a major upgrade over this past season.
If Clowe can play, put him over Carter or Ruutu

You're right. One big trade, a good FA signing and a decent FA signing are impossible.
