I can't call him "the worst" but Brian Leetch was clearly a guy that didn't want that role when it was thrust upon him.

True. Loved Leetch as a player, my favorite Ranger ever, but the guy did his leading on the ice. He couldn't wrangle in the dysfunction that was a hallmark of the late 90's and early '00's

I hate to say it and I will probably be flamed hard but Messier part 2 (2000-2004) was my least favorite captaincy...

Maybe it was because of the fact those teams were just so god awful but especially after he left to Vancouver I did not like it when he came back... close second tho Bill Cook.

Since they have been around since the 20's, hard to quantify. But I'd say Phil Esposito just because.

Good call.

Messier part 2 was a disaster. There potentially nothing worse than someone not having it anymore and thinking they do.

...kinda like Sather.

Too me it was worse then that cause he came in and thought he could do no wrong I don't remember him leading to much at all. I don't really remember a leader on that team at all.

Messier's last year, he played a lot of bottom six, and PK, and ended up being the second leading scorer of the team. The worst Mark Messier that ever played was still pretty good.

on a 27–40–7–8 team maybe but in terms of the NHL he did not even have half the points of Marty St Louis, he led the league with 94 points

by the end of his time here he was a shell of himself

I actually own a Brian Leetch jersey with the C. Found it in a thrift store in Boulder, Colorado for $15. Couldn't resist. Great quality too.

Wow, jealous, I found a Leetch home white, with a 94 patch in toronto for 40. I love bargain jerseys, it's like striking gold.

In my lifetime, I really didn't like Messier part 2 either, but those years were weird. Leetch also, but it was more of a figurehead than a captaincy during that time.

I really haven't experienced many in my lifetime.

Can someone give the lowdowns on Barry Beck and Kelly Kisio. From everything I've heard about Barry, it seems odd to me he could be a legit captain. Obviously always drowned out by the "shoot the puck, Barry" fans.

Also, my brother loved Kisio, but I wasn't born/was 1-2 during his years here. His stats seem good. Was he a legit leader? I know those early 90's teams weren't too shabby either.

Yeah. I would have to vote for Brian "Captain Valium" Leetch too. Greatest Ranger ever, but not greatest captain.

Not sure if he was the worst, but Messier 2.0 was a disappointment, especially considering that he is regarded as one of the greatest leaders of all time.

I wasn't thrilled with his return to the Rangers but I had hoped that he could whip the locker room into shape and get rid of the country club atmosphere. It didn't happen - there was a lot of floating and dysfunction under his watch as captain the second time around. Of course, he's not entirely blame for that, but it seems like he was no longer holding his teammates accountable like he used to.

Vic Hadfield. Pretty sure he was still the Captain in 1974 when he stood by and let Dave Schultz pummel Dale Rolfe in game 7 of the playoffs. A real Captain would have jumped in and done something. The excuse was always about the new 3rd man in rule and an automatic ejection but in a 4-3 game the Captain should have helped his player!

If people could list what they believe the role of 'the captain' is alongside their choice it would help us understand why they picked the player they did

i do too. White 3rd alt jersey thinger with the statue of liberty head over the NYR. Probably got worn for all of 3 games ever or something. Cost me much more than $15 too.

Definitely a bruise on his Rangers legacy. I got the impression he was worried about himself and his playing situation moreso than anything else. I guess thats what happens when skills deteriorate.

Personally, I think a captain is much more important off the ice than on it. Its why I never thought Callahan was a particularly great captain - he seemed to do his leading on the ice.
