I'm referring to actually playing in the lineup night in and night out. Not sitting in the press box, which one of Palmieri or Silfverberg were doing when Penner played.

I think the OP was reffering to this past trade deadline. I think it's too early to determine...

maybe the owner wanted to save $500,000 in real $ by trading him if he wasn't in the teams playoff plans anyways.

I think whoever mentioned Penner assumed the OP meant this years trade deadline. As I have heard from several in the media, it was a move to clear room for Kesler or Moulson. However, since Vancouver wasn't sold on selling Kesler for less than a whole lot, the deal never materialized. They missed out on the other rentals. I don't know if its true, but if so that is a backfire. I don't buy Duck's fans rationalization that they traded him to make room for the younger guys. If that is the case, just play the younger guys. Sit Penner in the press box. At least you have him if you want him which is better than a 4th rounder. Granted they did turn that 4th into a decent D, so it wasn't a disaster by any means.

For all time backfiring trades, the one that hurts me the most is Gretzky to the Blues. They gave up a bunch figuring it would be easy to resign the great one to keep playing with his buddy Hull. However, they never really clicked on the ice. Gretzky missed the limelight and despite promising otherwise, left for NY the next year after getting bounced by Detroit in the 2nd round.

You can disagree with the Penner move, but it clearly hasn't backfired (yet anyway, it very well might, but I doubt it).

The Preds have made some big deadline deals in the past that didn't pan out (Forsberg comes to mind).

I don't like bubble teams that make big splashes...it almost never works out and is usually deleterious to the team in the long term.

To add to the actual topic at hand, the Bill Guerin trade was a pretty unfortunate one for the Sharks in 2007, but primarily due to the playoff results (he had 2 pts in 9 games/2 rounds).

To Sharks:
Bill Guerin (UFA after season, goes to Isles)

To Blues:
Ville Nieminen
Jay Barriball
1st Rounder (David Perron)

Sharks have made several deadline deals that haven't worked out as they hoped. In '09 they trade Nick Bonino (& others) for Moen and Huskins. Moen left that summer and Huskins was a 6/7 D. Bonino is now the #2 center for Anaheim.

In '07 they traded for Bill Guerin who did little for them. It cost Ville Nieminen and a #1 which turned to be David Perron.

And then there's Eddie Belfour....Crazy Eddie would be absolutely horrible with a .884 save percentage and a 3.41 goals against in just 13 games and left 1 minute after FA opened up.

Give Wilson credit for trying but there's a reason he stood pat this year!

Back in 1995, the Whalers were in a playoff spot and traded their Captain, Pat Verbeek to the Rangers, who weren't and behind them in the ratings. Subsequently, the Rangers made the playoffs, while the Whalers did not.

It took two pages for someone to mention Erat for Forsberg

Brutal for Caps

Tom Gilbert for Nick Schultz was brutal for the Oilers.

In hindsight, it looks pretty bad (certainly not good at all for the Caps), but until Forsberg becomes an NHL regular (if at all), it isn't the worst trade in the world. At the time, the trade made some sense, though certainly McPhee overpaid to get what he wanted.

The Craig Rivet-Josh Gorges trade is a classic one. Trade a young d-man for a veteran to make a Cup run. Then once you don't win the Cup, you realize how bad that move was. Same with the Coburn-Zhitnik trade.

I know this thread is about deadline deals that failed, but I keep thinking about what may have been the best ever, the Islanders acquiring Butch Goring in 1980. Isles were loaded with talent but struggling at the time. They had won the President's Trophy the year before, and got bounced in the second round. They were disappointing again mid season, and something had to be done to wake them up. Enter Goring, who sparked them to the next 4 Cups, including a Conn Smythe.

Forgive me, I just want to have some positive Islanders thoughts this week. Can you blame me?

Raffi Torres to the Sabres for Paetsch and a 2nd

Raffi was either hurt when he got here or injured shortly after, and then a healthy scratch in the playoffs.

A bit of a stretch.

They went 3-1-0-0 in his first 4 games.

They did finish on a 0-9-0-2 skid...

Coho for Kassian, so we could get big and mean. Turned out we needed to score more than 1 goal per game and got bounced in 5.

Don't feel too bad that didn't exactly work out too well for Minnesota. At least you got some semblance of value for him. All we got was one subpar season and a compliance buyout in Gilbert. It was pretty much a crap for crap trade.
