Meh. Gotta say the right things. The alumni game doesn't get him any credit towards the Wings GM job.
The Wings GM job wasn't available...if it was, he'd never be here.
If he's still here in 5 years I'd be extremely surprised.
I dont see the job available anytime soon.
I will take the other approach 35 year fan of stevie f yzerman.
If Holland moved upstairs he would consider the Detroit job. Hes a warrior though deep down and has never left a job half done. When couldnt walk he played and led team to stanley cup. He holds winning over everything.
He has a job to finish so do not feel unless something odd happens detroit goes into disarray he moves anytime soon. Holland will not leave detroit in shambles.
Ken is signed through 2015. Babcock has contract through 2014. Mike is 53 I believe Ken 58. They will want to turn it around one more time.
I think Steve's biggest thing will be to not return to detroit till he proves he can do it elsewhere. Now is 5-8 years we might have a problem. Especially if detroit falters for a bit. I dont see that happening though cause they have some very solid young prospects and the ship should be fine for the future in detroit even when datsyuk and zetterberg move on The stars might align Stevie might feel the push to return home or detroit but imho he will not do that till he wins a cup here pushes this team to the top and never has to hear the words he is a part of the system and owes it all to detroit.
Theres only a five year window of difference or ten years between the staff etc. that detroit has now and Stevie. There will be other options also. Meaning other candidates that they will look at etc.
I really think is over 50 % we keep steve till he moves on into retirement himself etc.
If that is what Vinik wants I think this will happen myself. Steve had the drive to build and run a team, to control everything and be recognized for it. He did this all on his own with the help of Vinik being a good owner. That drive personifies stevie in what he is and whom he is and what is going to drive us to the top.
Loyalty Commitment Honor Leadership Integrity
STEPHEN G. YZERMAN These are the words in 35 years of knowledge that I have accumulated that define this man. We still have a ways to go with him IMHO.
P.S. Steve has very close ties to the owner of the redwings would say is father son almost relationship and a good one. If team goes into disarray and Illitch asked Steve to right the ship I do think that would happen. Now saying that Detroit is in good hands right now. Is also other candidates for GM to come back and other candidates for coaching etc. If others decide to move up and on. I think Detroit is fine with its use and who leads it so I personally am not scared of stevie bolting anytime soon pun intended.
