Only complaints I have is with the Belak protection. Either Holden or Green should have been protected ahead of him.

Belak can play forward or defence so I think they see the value in that... I don't think I would have protected Kidd or do they have to protect 2 goalies?

A few INTERESTING players available....

Scanning through the protected/unprotected list...the following players appeal to me....

1) D Chris Therien

Age: 32
HT: 6-5
WT: 235
Salary: $2,600,000.00
Contract Expires: 2004/2005

2) D Todd Simpson

Age: 30
HT: 6-3
WT: 215
Salary: $1,400,000.00
Contract Expires: 2004/2005

They are both solid defencemen that play physical and use their body effectively. Chris Therien was pretty solid against us I thought, and he will be a good player for the Leafs to have....

Thoughts?

One stupid thing.

They protected Renberg at $2 mil and exposed Green at $1.5 mil.

I think Green has a chance at being picked up. Maybe they want someone to take him to free up some cash and open up a roster spot for Stajan.

I dunno, but I don't like that move.

I have no problem with Green not being protected, but I would rather protect Holden then Belak, with Perrott and Domi being protected Belak isn't needed.

I don't see how that is stupid. Renberg is a horse along the boards and can play with Sundin. I don't mind Green but he is certainly replaceable.

Hmm...dunno.

Therien was criticized heavily last year particularly by Flyer fans and Simpson I can't really comment on, haven't paid enough attention to. Would be sceptical if only because we'd have to expose another player off the roster.

Interesting seeing Reichel's name on that "Available" list.

I've also liked Therien....he always seems to up to play against the Leafs.....some of his better games have been against Toronto.....He has great size and plays a physical game PLUS his salary is not too high by NHL standards and would be a good solid pickup by Toronto......maybe the Leafs could pick him up now and then later on in the season try to swing a deal with someone else right before the trading deadline for a solid #2 or maybe even #1 guy for our blueline.............just my 2-cents on the matter.

Scouting reports on Therien and Simpson.

Todd Simpson
Preseason projected role Simpson will continue to be a rock-hard presence with the Coyotes in 2003-04.

Assets Is as tough as nails and very competitive. Always shows great team skills. Can be a very effective defensive defenseman, especially when laying on the body on a regular basis.

Flaws Can get burned by faster forwards in the NHL and occasionally takes bad penalties. Needs to avoid more concussion problems.

Career potential No. 5 or 6 defenseman

Chris Therien
Preseason projected role Therien is once again expected to line up next to longtime partner Eric Desjardins in 2003-04.

Assets Is extremely steady behind the blueline. Has a good shot from the point. Keeps the game simple. Performs well when matched up against big forwards.

Flaws Doesn't play with nearly enough physical presence for his huge build. Lacks offensive flair.

Career potential Top-four defenseman

I actually like simpson,he's a tough stay at home 5-6 guy that could come in handy. He would be just as valuable as marchment and another very tough blueliner can't hurt.
