Valeri Bure signs with Kings

Per L.A. Times, Valeri Bure signs with Kings. Depth insurance in case Frolov does not return?

Quote:
Kings Gain Some Depth, Sign Forward Valeri Bure by Eric Stephens;Chris Foster, From Times Staff and Wire Reports: The Kings, who have lost out on a handful of upper echelon free-agent forwards, have signed veteran forward Valeri Bure to a one-year contract. Bure, 31, could give the Kings depth up front. He had 22 goals and 52 points with Florida and Dallas during the 2003-04 season. Bure scored 88 goals during a three-season stretch with Calgary, from 1998 to 2001, but also feuded with coaches over work ethic. A second-round pick by Montreal in 1992, Bure has also spent much of his career in the shadow of older brother Pavel Bure, who was one of the NHL's top goal-scorers in the 1990s.

...

His numbers have actually been pretty decent. Let's see what he can do.

Has to be. This guy could be a stud with the new rule changes. Instant offense. Anyone know how much?

What's his injury history - less than his brothers?

Yeah, probably insurance in case Frolov doesn't sign or if any other deals (such as Bondra) don't pan out. Not a terrible signing. He did bounce back last season with 52 points in 68 games. It'd be great if he could duplicate (or improve upon) that this season. I'm afraid, though, that AM may stick him on the 3rd line, which would probably be bad.

I like this quote from his TSN profile: "Shoots often and rarely misses the net." Boy, do the Kings need that badly. Perhaps pair him with Luc, who would have a field-day with all of the rebounds.

The BAD: he's soft, he's been unpopular everywhere he's played, and his first name isn't Ziggy.

The GOOD: he's cheap, he provides some scoring depth, it's only a one year deal, and the Kings'll sell a couple more season tickets to Candace Cameron and her family...

I love this signing because Bure is a legit top 6 forward IMO. He has great scoring ability and his style will fit very well with all the new rule changes. If, he can play 70+ games for us, I think he will put up atleast 50 points which is very good considering he will most likely be on our second line. If, you put him on the ice with Conroy as his center, he will have plenty of shots and Camms or Brown will be on the other wing. He has been inconsistent but he's only 31 year's old and the talent is there. He is cheap so, if he gets hurt hopefully, BOTH Camms and Brown will step up as top 6 forwards or Luc can step in and it wouldn't be like we invested a whole lot in him.

Frolov-Roenick-Demitra
Camms/Brown-Conroy-Bure
Luc-Army-Klatt
Cowan-Belanger-Avery

Flinn, Kostopolous

Time to get a top 4 D-man and we are set!

Unfortunately for us most people think this signing was made bacause Frolov is not returning. So you would have to take him off the first line.

I would have prefered to see one of the kids get his roster spot, but to be honest it's not a bad signing. He has 400 pts in 621 games and he's 31, not a dinosaur. Let's see what he'll do, with the new NHL this could be a great acquisition.

He signed a contract with Avangard. He said he would probably play there this year. That is about all I have heard. He is in training camp with Avangard right now.

Not a fan of this signing. Valeri Bure's the type of player that will put up points in the regular season but then disappear in the playoffs. Don't like the idea of him taking away ice time from the kids and especially not as a replacement for Frolov. Look at the bright side, though. Valeri has helped bring Florida the number one overall pick two of his three years there.

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but this is sad! Because we were waiting for Ziggy, we missed out on both Satan and Kariya. What are our options *now*? Between slim and none, and slim just left town!

I'm sorry, but we might just as well have signed Anson Carter. Really, what's the difference?

Uh huh, what did I say a week ago? Who would you rather have Bure, or Carter? Look's like my source was right again!

I'm too drunk to know what you meant, but the Kings had it narrowed down to the two. I'm glad we got Bure, he can still produce. 60+ points isn't out of the question for him.

I like this deal.

Ha ha! As you were posting about Carter, I went back and edited my post above to ask the obvious: "Couldn't we just have signed Carter?"

I wonder how Bure is in shootouts? Those could be worth around 10-points this season...I like the signing because it should force the kids to push harder to break into the top 6 and Bure will have to work hard to stay there...
