The Tellqvist non-hater thread

Since before the free agency period started a lot of people were talking about Toronto pursuing a new backup for Belfour instead of Telly. I dont think this is a good idea, and Telly's play has also proven that thus far it is not a good idea.

This past season he had a decent season leading the Baby Leafs to a playoff birth when they were expected to be near the bottom of the standings. I say give him a chance to show what he is made of. I do not think he will be our starter at any time, but will make for a solid cheap backup.

A lot of people recommend Byron Dafoe. In what way is he better suited to be the backup then Telly? Not only is he aging, but has compiled an impressive 9-22 W/L statistic since leaving Boston. Just leave Telly where he is, and the backup situation is solved.

Well since we haven't seen much from Toronto in terms of goalie signings minus a high draft choice, I already assumed that Telly's going to be the backup.

And he's pretty good, I don't know why so many are against him.

I absolutely want Telly to be the backup. Now is his chance.

If we send him to the minors we risk losing him according to the new rules, if we ever have to call him up.

I say we give him a chance, at league minimum he's not wasteing cap space.. (maybe 450,000 million of it)

Best outcome. He becomes like Turco and Hasek, they learn from Eddie being a starter. Unlikey.

Kidd already was an experienced back up goaltender, and played alot as a starter as well. He actually wasn't that bad when he wasn't in Toronto, he just kind of caved under the immense pressure in T.O.

At first when thinking about this i was like give Tellqvist the job. After hearing Leafs Lunch today what if the Leafs could get a back-up with some past starting experience like Potvin,Shields or Dafoe for the same amount of money? If i were the Leafs i would definitely consider it heavily. Especially when it was bad back-up goaltending that cost us two years ago.

You mean when we went out and got a back-up with some past starting experience?

We can't keep plopping veteran goaltenders on top of our rookies after our older goalies retire/get traded.

Tellqvist should get more work this season. Keep Eddie nice and loose for the playoffs.

Tellqvist>Kidd...but I'm not making a point or anything.Tellqvist deserves again a chance, next year.I'd have no probem with him being our backup. He's decent imo.No need of wasting money on another backup, in the fa market.Signing a backup isn't the priority right now, we don't have much cap room.

I've always been a Telly fan, especially before a Baby Leafs game he sat down with me and we talked hockey for like half an hour. And I think its safe to say he gets the back-up role this year

There's no chance he'll be worse than Kidd, we might as well give him a shot.

I am down on Tellqvist but not down enough to want Shields or Dafoe. Ugh.

The only thing I don't like about Telly is when he goes 10 feet out of the net to cut down angles. Scares the hell outta me.

Good point. Although I think a guy like Potvin or Shields would do a much, much better job than Kidd ever did. Tellqvist is an unknown commodity & if Eddie goes down it would suck to be in the same situation again with horrible back-up goaltending costing us points that we need.

All goaltenders were an unknown commodity at one point.

This is Tellqvist's chance. The Leafs might as well not even bother attending the draft otherwise.

I don't hate Telly, but honestly his decision making is still really questionable, he gets out way too far to cut down the angle and when he gets burned doing so tends to sit back way too far in the net for a while to compensate. And he still has trouble with long shots to boot.

I hope he gets over it, but I don't think he's starter material.

the leafs will have lot's of extra cash this year so they should be investing in coaching along with scouting. get an extra goalie coach and everything else. invest in all that stuff.
