The way Meszaros is playing lately, that'd actually leave me less confident in the blueline. We needed shutdown types. We got one, ostensibly. I've got my fingers crossed and hoping that Savard and Prout continue to be impressive.
Not to start anything, but is anybody else growing a little concerned about Murray's development given his shoulder and now his knee?
I've thought about it ...
Every player is different. I've seen guys have major injuries that have seemingly derailed their entire career (Brett Connolly) ... and I've seen guys have serious injuries that have only side tracked them temporarily (Jared Cowen).
The most clear example for me is Jared Spurgeon, who is currently pairing with Ryan Suter in Minnesota. Spurgeon came onto the WHL scene as a talented 16 year old, but suffered a couple of major injuries that year. As a 17 year old, hopes were high that he could become another Kris Russell type of guy, before a concussion sidelined him for a good chunk of the season, along with other nagging injuries. As an 18 year old, we had only seen him play 84 WHL games and didn't know what to expect ... but, he had a huge year that year, proving himself one of the top defensemen in the league, and has gone on to a nice career in the NHL.
Hopefully, Murray learns a lot from seeing the game from above, rehabs himself, and comes back a better player next year.
Right, but there are also guys like Klesla and Erik Johnson, highly touted defensemen who suffered injuries early in their careers. Not that I'm saying he's injury prone, but it is concerning that his development may be impacted.
